i had one very similar. i had the ddw900! the receiver is pretty nice, mine had hdmi passthrough plenty of optical cable inputs.

The sound was good. The surrounds provided adequate sound as did the fronts, but the center channel was really lacking, it was sometimes hard to make out dialougue and i found myself constantly turning the volume up and down, even after going through the built in speaker calibration on it.

The sub is pretty nice though, pretty powerful. Not as tight sounding as aftermarket subs, a little but boomy, but it does it's job very well indeed! I enjoyed it as my introduction into surround sound

If you could squeeze it out to $300 you could get the HTCT100 Sony Soundbar (much better than you imagine). http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665361523

Otherwise go with the original sony you purchased, its prob the best value right now for you

Yes and no, the subwoofer has numerous 3 HDMI inputs, 2 Optical inputs and sub analog audio inputs, and the subwoofer does HDMI switching and is powered also.

I would really stay away from soundbars if you want surround sound. It's not going to properly disperse the audio and it relies heavily on reflectivity. As a result things are going to sound muddy or just plain off.

I've owned the predecessor to the system you are thinking about getting for 5 years now... at least I'm pretty sure it's the predecessor. It's the Sony HT-DDW670 HTIB. It's a 5.1 system with 600 watts. I've kept it in good condition and taken good care of it. I bought it for $175 at Best Buy when they actually used to carry HTIB's in their stores.

Anyways, I have loved my system since day one. To be honest, it's a great sounding system, and not just for the money.

I remember seeing the HTD-DW790 at Best Buy when it first came out and wanted it because it was actually selling for less money and had more watts than my old system. If the 790 is anything like the 670, then I would buy it without any hesitation. I know that it's almost 2010 now, and your post is almost a year old, but I just wanted to give you my input. For the money, I don't think there is a better choice. The sound kicks ass, especially in DTS mode, and plays music very well. Go buy it if you haven't already!!
