Thats an 80s/90s hangover from Gregory's Girl and That Sinking Feeling that even affected the 2E version of the latter's release in the UK. It still makes me laugh that my US blu of GG has the original soundtrack as a play in option. Given the broadest accent in that is Capaldi's and the three lines of dialogue from the Boat painter that is some alteration. That makes me yearn even more for a definitive and original UK blu. ![]() |

It's nowhere near as bad as GG - just two or three lines here and there where words are replaced (I think Cèilidh was one of them)because they'd been fairly careful to avoid a repeat of the GG/That Sinking Feeling situation when shooting it. If you didn't know it had been done you probably wouldn't notice. The changes are so minor I don't think anyone even remembers them being made. It's certainly nothing like replacing Larry King with Jonathan Ross in the UK version of Shrek 2.

Not really: it happens in most countries in the world where it's a word that nobody there can be expected to know or which has a different meaning. It's why subtitle translations are rarely word for word accurate and why Captain America's list of cultural things to catch up with in The Winter Soldier is different in every territory and why Hallelujah I'm a Bum was called Hallelujah I'm a Tramp in the UK. The idea is to maximise communication/profits rather than taking the audience out of the movie and asking each other "What's a Cèilidh?" or "Why is Al Jolson singing about being an arse?" Without Warners investment, Local Hero wouldn't just not have been able to afford Burt Lancaster, the film simply wouldn't have been made, so it's only natural they'd want to increase their prospects with US audiences.

It's curious that where Westerns used to be the single most successful exported genre because it required so little translation - so much so that when the Americans gradually all but stopped making them in the 70s that Italy, Spain and even the UK started to fill in the gap - these days even a film like True Grit does only 32% of its business outside the US at a time when the foreign market is bigger than ever, and even that did way more than the 14-23% most westerns get. It's even stranger when so many of them are backed with German money (though Germany is still a huge home video market for the genre). Last edited by Aclea; 01-31-2018 at 07:01 PM. |

![]() I absolutely love this film! Story, acting, music, all fantastic! It doesn't even look like it will be getting a DVD release anytime soon, so a Blu-ray is very unlikely at this point. Despite being premiered in June last year, the only way you can currently watch it is via streaming. ![]() |

Hey guys,
Thought I would join in on this thread - Currently I am wanting a blu ray release of a decent Arnie movie of True Lies and also am really wanting a UK release of Rob Zombie's Halloween... found it on German release but would prefer a UK one instead. There is a release on the sequel but not the first one which really is a pain |

Thanks guys for the replies, much appreciated
Am aware of no release of True Lies, just wanting it when it finally happens Regarding the Halloween, hopefully there is a UK release but the Australian release isnt bad, I've been into the JB HiFi store before when I was out there in 2013. Its like a Target/Walmart or a different version of the old Blockbuster for us Brits |
