MARI, SEVENTEEN, IS DYING. EVEN FOR HER THE WORST IS YET TO COME!

The directorial debut of Wes Craven, the man behind such horror favourites as A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes and Scream, The Last House on the Left justly retains its reputation as one of the most harrowing cinematic experiences of all time, nearly half a century on from its original release.

On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to the big city to attend a concert by shock-rockers Bloodlust. Attempting to pick up some marijuana on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic and depraved Krug (David Hess). Gagged and bound, the young women are bundled into a car trunk and driven to the woods, where the gang subject them to a terrifying ordeal of sexual humiliation, torture and murder.

Unleashed on an unsuspecting public in 1972, The Last House on the Left shocked audiences with its graphic and unflinching portrayal of interpersonal violence, paving the way for a whole host of cheap imitators looking to capitalise on its success. It is Wes Craven s original alone, however, that remains one of the true watershed moments in horror (and indeed, film) history.

Disc 1 says The UNCUT version of the film. Are you looking for something more than UNCUT, the FULL UNCUT?

What a disappointment. Obviously just the same version as before. It's an effrontery to call this the uncut version. It's Wes Craven's later days director's cut in which he cut out stuff that was in the print that was saved.

I guess not and I guess the other 40+ minutes of outtakes Roy has will not be used including the additional footage released in 2008.

So it's missing quite a bit but maybe there is more to it. Maybe they asked for the uncut print and were refused access. Maybe they didn't want to pay for the 40+ additional minutes of outtakes and maybe didn't want the other footage with the forced lesbian scenes. It does say Roy remember Wes Craven, I think that is new. I would have thought those things would have came up in the conversation with Roy.

I don't think we will ever see the uncut version now. Then again you never know what goes on behind the scenes and it could very well be the people at Arrow don't know about any of those things. Maybe they don't know there is a real uncut version that is over 8 minutes longer and maybe Roy didn't mention the other 40 minutes of outtakes he has. It could just be an unfortunate mistake. I can't help but think that if this was the real 91 minute uncut version that they would have mentioned that because it would be big news.

Should have clarified, the version with footage that Wes Craven held back because he thought it was too much, as discussed earlier in the thread

This appears to be as definitive as it's going to get for this film. Another classic to cross off the ultimate edition wishlist

Isn't "Krug and Company" a little longer than the Uncut version? It's pretty funny to advertise "the Uncut Version" and then have a longer cut on the same release.

EDIT: Nah, I was wrong; "Krug and Company" has some extra footage, but it is more than offset by some censorship cuts, so the net result is a shorter cut.

Ughh. I've had the original blu-ray for a couple of years and still haven't watched that copy, but I'll still be tempted by this one.
Movies like this were easier to watch when I was a teenager but there's still some weird-ass nostalgia about it.

Don't know about Krug & Company. What's it's deal? Did I miss it in the thread? Disappointed no uncut-uncut footage.

I use the distinction "Final Director's Cut" for when a director goes back years later and recuts the film, whether the results are good ("Brazil", "Blade Runner") or bad ("Star Wars"), as distinct from a contemporary director's cut. "Definitive" feels too much like a marketing term to me, plus I consider myself sort of a purist and tend to have a knee-jerk reaction against directors going back and re-cutting (even though some circumstances justify it and some results are clear improvements), so I wouldn't like a word that seems to signal that the final cuts are better.

You're not missing too much, it's mainly historically important at this point. A couple scenes pack a punch still (primarily the disembowling, which is very effective tonally), but it's loaded with cartoony crap (some of the characters/performances, some parts of the "revenge") that severely undermines it. If you're trying to be any kind of student of the horror genre you need to see it, otherwise I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone unless you are a Bergman fan and want to see how it remade The Virgin Spring.

Even though this isn't a ultimate uncut edition I'm still pre-ordering it. I really like the artwork. Saw it in the drive-in years ago and then on a crappy edited version on VHS. It's one of those movies you see every few years for me anyway.

Yeah its just really a pretty bad exploitation movie with some mean spirited torment and a funny revenge kill near the end which makes it worth watching. David Hess is always a pleasure to watch also.

I completely disagree. I believe the cartoony characters, and music adds a layer of grotesque subversiveness that lends more to the film's disturbing nature. Just my opinion

The music really confused me the first time I watched it. Took some terrifying scenes and made them pretty silly.
