I'm not a Guillermo Del Toro fanboy but I do think he's a terrific filmmaker. Twenty-five bucks is too risky for a blind buy. Anyone care to sell me on this?

It’s really an enchanting tale with wonderful acting, great visuals, and an alluring soundtrack. It’s not GDTs best, but it’s up there.

Well, The Shape of Water received 13 Oscar nominations and Guillermo del Toro won a Golden Globe for Best Director for it, so there's that

I'm not a del Toro fanboy either, but I've seen most of his films with the exception of Cronos and Blade II. I'd rate The Shape of Water as one of his very best right behind Pan's Labyrinth. The film is a bit quirky and I could see some viewers possibly being uncomfortable or taking offense with some of the subject matter. I personally loved it, but then again I'm into whimsical, off-kilter fantasy films, which for my tastes last year also included Okja, Colossal and A Monster Calls. Beauty and the Beast meets The Creature from the Black Lagoon comparisons are certainly not unfounded. If you enjoy dark, very adult style fairy tale stories, then this could possibly fit in your wheelhouse.

I’m right on the fence with this one too.
I know it’s up for a jillion oscars, but for those that have seen it, is it rewatchable? High replay value? Seems like a one and done kind of movie to me tho I might be wrong, should I get it?

I definitely think it's a film worth rewatching. I am not too experienced with Guillermo del Toro's films. Other than this, I've only seen Crimson Peak and the second half of Pan's Labyrinth (I wasn't a fan of either of them)(Yes, I will eventually revisit Pan's Labyrinth in it's full length). I really enjoyed this one, all the characters are likable in their own ways, the score is beautiful, and the story is sweet and suspenseful.

I'm normally a big fan of his films with my two favorites being The Devil's Backbone and Pacific Rim, but I hated The Shape of Water with a passion. It was one of the few films I have seen that I really wanted to walk out of, but my opinion seems to be in the minority.

SOLD!

This will be a blind buy for me too...but from what I've read (here and several critics reviews), I feel like it will be a safe purchase and I'm gonna like it a lot. I also like the cast.

Check out The Devil's Backbone too.

I'm upset that it doesn't appear that the movie will contain an audio commentary, his commentaries for his other movies were always entertaining.

Out of curiosity, why did you not enjoy it?

This was probably my favourite film of his since Pan's Labyrinth.

Looked fantastic, not quite as explosive with the highlights as Pacific Rim, but there were many times it looked 3D as detail and depth was off the charts. Colors not really that crazy, but we do get to see some heavy usage of DCI-P3 teals throughout the movie (which seems to be a major theme, color tonally and story wise) that will definitely set it apart from the blu ray.

If Pacific Rim is one of the kings of UHD, I'd probably put this a few slots under. It's very similar in quality, just maybe slightly more reserved.

I think it will look just fine in 1080p to be honest.

Well, it was finished in 2K, so it’s pretty much gonna be 1080p either way. The question is really: Is it worth a ~$5 upcharge to get HDR, WCG, improved chroma resolution, better compression and higher bandwidth?

For me, it’s the (ultra high) definition of a no-brainer.

I mean it's a gorgeous looking film, but not super colorful. Plus, my TV isn't even the greatest at HDR to begin with lol.
