I completely agree Joe. As I previously stated in the BR 2049 3D thread. I feel that this movie was actually quite underrated with regards to it 3D presentation. The prerequisites by which I critique a 3D movie were all met and then some with this title. Of course one has to take into account the ambience and general setting of the movie as being dark and dreary but even then I feel like the presentation pushes through and excels. What most impressed me was the stunning clarity and detail that the viewing experience provided especially considering the overall darkness of the movie. Truly, I believe that most people who haven’t seen it in 3D will be impressed and those that were underwhelmed the first time they watched it give it another try. They may be delighted by a better viewing experience another time around

The 3D coming through despite the darkness (or what I called gloominess) is what amazed me most. It demonstrates again that depth and detail can sufficiently come through even in dark scenes. Have seen it done in other films (though can't recall which at the moment). Our moderator, 13th man, myself and others have talked about the importance of a properly calibrated set. Otherwise, 3D can be distorted in dimension, detail and clarity (including ghosting and shimmering where it need not appear). Now, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to calibrate a set close enough using a set up disc. But it can't be eyeballed or left to factory settings. I'm wondering if BR2047 is one of those discs where the settings not being correct can throw the picture off tremendously compared to others because of it's many dark and gloomy scenes. That's just a guess. |

Just got the Dutch release of The Hole 3D today. Only tested it to see it would play with English audio and no subtitles. No problem.
Few minutes I saw the depth was extremely good and the story had hardly begun. ![]() |

![]() ![]() The 3D is astoundingly good. I mean this is basically reference material stuff. That's how good this looks.Hollywood could learn something from the 3D in this. That being said...on to the film. As someone else said in the other thread, so much of this is guys talking with little use /need of 3D. If you are somebody (like myself) who needs subtitles to understand what is being said, you should not view the 3D version. Subtitles are not available on the 3D disc. You will have to watch this in 2D on 2D Blu. Whether or not it is used on both the 2D Blu and DVD I don't know yet. Normally I can watch a movie without subtitles and just follow the general plot and enjoy the movie. If it is a documentary with visuals and voice over work,it can be pleasant. This however, I didn't even watch thru to the end. I don't know how far I got before I turned it off. |

This is just conjecture on my part but from what I read, there should be a difference between bluray and 4k to begin with where that might not be the case with 2D to 3D. How did the color saturation on the 3D in your normal setting compare to the standard bluray? That might be a better way to compare. When changing to wide, did you notice any difference in the 3D depth or detail? Any glimmering, ghosting or too much color in some areas. Just asking but by changing the color saturation to match the 4k, one might alter other things. Try using your calibration disc and see if there were changes to your bluray settings. Don't forget, 3D is still bluray and should adhere to the proper calibration. I have made eyeball changes only to realize they were artificial. If this made no change, then voila - the wide setting was the proper one to begin with! ![]() |

You just reminded me of something. Like everyone, I have different color options besides the saturation settings in the advanced options too and do use a low level of advanced flesh tone and color enhancement as well. However, what confused me with your inquiry was that I used these adjustments at the time I did my calibration, not later on like you just did. Recall at the time having to go back and forth with other settings to be sure the color and tint were precisely right. Too much of the advanced option caused the color test pattern not to zero in precisely no matter how much I altered the basic saturation. There was also a slight change on the white level (or something like that) which needed adjustment (this wasn't basic brightness). But I did not alter anything more for 3D. Did not notice an appreciable difference in Cirque solie worlds apart. Toy Story 1 was a bit darker but the color wasn't affected that much. BR2049 in 3D might be tough to use as an example with the producers trying to retain it's use of gloomy texture while extending the 3D experience as best as possible. You know the difficulties with darker scenery. But it all comes down to what one likes and if you like it - STICK WITH IT! Also, aren't you using a projector? If so, then can see why you might need adjusting that might not be necessary on mine since different technology. Hey, did you like the movie? I did. ![]() |
