Just watched the movie. Not as bad as critics claimed it to be. Good cinematography, decent acting, I enjoyed the score and the story's okay. The pacing's kind of weak.

3/5- Doubt I'll watch it again.

The opening credits are sorta out of place, they just start at 11 minutes in, and feel more like a TV show opening, showing clips from the movie we are about to watch.

There isn't anything here that hasn't been done better in other movies, weakest point for me would be Leto, he's kind of blank as a character, like a Grand Theft Auto protagonist. His US military background doesn't come into play until three quarters in, and then that doesn't really go anywhere. The romance subplot was weak too.

Tadanobu Asano and Kippei Shiina were the highlights for me. Acting was pretty good all around, with the weakest being Leto and Shiori Kutsuna as the sister.

It was kind of bullshit that
[Show spoiler]the Seizu men walk up to the side of the car point blank and shoot Kiyoshi, while Nick and Akihiro are in the backseat unharmed.

2/5

For a more engaging foreigner/yakuza crime movie, I'd rather rewatch Shinjuku Incident.

Yes, military subplot is unneeded and romance occurred pretty quickly.
I will say this about the latter, Shiori is beautiful.

I saw a new movie starring Jared Leto coming to Netflix and I was interested. But once I watched the trailer, I thought, nah, pass.

Oh, then you may not like it. Leto doesn't speak much and has the blank stare.

Oh I dug this. It's not some masterpiece but as a quasi-Refn crime thriller, it's a solid couple of hours. Easily one of the better Netflix movies I've seen, hopefully that isn't damning with faint praise lol. And the 4K stream looked pretty nice.

Honestly, out of all the Netflix movies I've seen (I refuse to call Annihilation that, although I may have to), it's the best. Better than Mute and The Cloverfield Paradox.

I don't think this movie is perfect, but I also don't understand the vitriol over it.
