I predict a bunch of films that no more than 12 people have seen get nominated again next year.

Sadly, this is my view too. The Academy has become so pompous and self-serving, that most in the Oscars every year just use the ceremony to preach Leftist BS from a pulpit designed for celebrating movies. I haven't watched the show in a very long time, but I did see Gary Oldman's speech online later. Based on what I've read, it seemed his moment was the only bright one.

I really want nominations for Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman in Boy Erased (and a WIN for Nicole, tbh), but I’m a bit worried about the September release date.
I’m not sure what to make of Mary Queen of Scots and The Favourite both coming this year. I have a gut feeling that one will be more recognized than the other, but they’re both utterly stacked with Oscar favorites. The Best Actress field seems absolutely stacked right now, and I’m really excited to see how it plays out. That category (plus Boy Erased and whatever other queer films emerge this year) are about the full extent of my interest at this point. |

Runtime: 132 minutes Release date: November 24, 2017 Your Post: March 18, 2018 (144 days later, or 207,360 minutes) On the other hand, even if 12 people continually did nothing but watch Call Me By Your Name from when it came out untul right now, they would have watched it 1571 times each, or 18851 times between them. Even if they went to the VIP theatre with $50 seats, that works out to less than a $1,000,000 gross. Don't be f**king obtuse. |

I really doubt it, it's very hard to get nominated for an encore performance when one wasn't for the original film. Plus without Coogler, I'm guessing it's gonna get reviews more in line with typical Rocky sequels.

You're probably right, but this is exactly what people were saying about Get Out around this time last year

Was it just golden globes it was nominated for? For some reason I thought it was nominated for both.

I think the Academy needs a big blockbuster movie like Black Panther to be nominated if they want their viewership to go up. They need to have a balance of small/indie movies and big movies being nominated. People don't care about Best Picture Winner Shape of Water, Best Picture Winner Black Panther (or some other big movie) would gain a lot more interest across all boards, especially social media.

After all of that, when you throw in having to hear the spoiled brats vomit political diatribe and their "views" onto the little people....it’s kind of like "yeah, thanks for the tips." No thanks. ![]() |

Most of the public don't need to be lectured on how to treat the women in our lives and the ladies we encounter in everyday life. We have friends from diverse ethnic backgrounds and faiths who we see as people, not skin colours that need to be pandered to. WE, on the whole, don't have a problem. Hollywood and the entertainment industry has a serious sex and race problem, so sort it out amongst yourselves, and stop projecting your deep-seated issues onto the rest of society, because despite what the media and press would have us believe, general society follows the live and let live mantra. There's idiots in every part of society, and Hollywood seems to have a greater concentration of sex pests and racists than most industries. That's their problem, not ours.

Stallone won the Golden Globe and was nominated at the Oscars for Creed. But Jordan just got critics group attention (looks like the big one was a National Society of Film Critics win for best actor)

Honestly, the Oscars have become a platform for hollywood trying to do "the right thing".
I often steer away from the conversation only because i don't want to get misunderstood. But nowadays homosexuality, black lives matter, and "times up" based movies are a sure shot at winning an Oscar. Now all three of those topics are extremely important and every day we step closer to over coming those problems is a win. But as a film fanatic, it gets a but monotonous to have to accept movies you personally think are only being recognized to make the Oscars socially relevant. Aside from this, there are a handful of excellent movies that don't even get a mention at the oscars. These "snubs" make the oscars half baked for me personally. I could go on and on with examples but I won't. I'm sure you all have personal picks from just last year that never made it to the oscars. That being said, I still like the glitz and glam of the show so its a fun watch. |

I guess growing up with the Oscars of the 70s, I got very accustomed to their occasional politics. They haven't become that way - politics have ebbed and flowed throughout the awards for decades, and you can either take it or leave it. Considering that the awards began with no coverage in a ballroom, it's my guess that they'll continue no matter who stomps their feet and refuses to watch.

Seriously, really? Their viewership is fine, and, moreover, the viewership is far from the point. You are basically suggesting that the sell out in order to make manchildren feel less embarrassed about watching superhero films into their 30s. And who are these "people" you speak of? It's not like The Shape of Water is some obscure indie film, it made more than $170 million. Quote:
Moreover, most of what you say here is factually wrong. There is no "everyone gets a trophy," in every category there are five nominees (except makeup where there are three, sometimes two), only one of whom gets a trophy. So I presume by "everyone gets a trophy" you are referring to the technical awards and the awards for films that are not live action, feature length, narrative films? Well, fun fact: The films you like wouldn't exist without the technical background, and it takes just as much work to do that as to be an above-the-title name, and I think it's great that they get honored as well. You speak like someone ignorant. Moreover, the major awards are sprinkled throughout the show to assuage the boredom of people like you (oh wait! you're not even watching so never mind), in fact, my own favourite category Best Supporting Actor is first of the night. Yes that is annoying but there was less than I expected this year. Kimmel did have a few very condescending remarks it is true. |

Taking Moonlight out of the discussion, I honestly don't remember the last Best Picture winner that I thought was a legitimately great film.
The Academy just rewards mediocre shit these days. ...or the overall quality of mainstream cinema has just gone into the toilet. |
