Brain Damage is a very middling Blu-ray, nothing at all like what you would get from a new negative scan. It's better than the DVD and I'm glad to own it, but the master used shows its age. I assume the negative is probably missing, hence no new master.

I've seen middling Blu-rays of low-budget cult items, but this one ain't one of 'em. It's really quite good IMO.

Ha! I also just received 2 and 3 from Synapse. I had the trilogy UK steelbook but the newer (of all 3) US BDs look better and have better encodes. Gonna watch all 3 soon. Haven't watched them in awhile. Great trash films.

Upon playing around with the screenshots in gimp and boosting the contrast on the screenshot from the new BD, I discovered that the old BD is the same blood pattern on the title, it is just that the contrast is up so high on the old release that it kills a lot of detail and shape of the blood. So since the new Arrow release is corrected... it looks thicker. So it is in fact the original main title without alterations at all. Glad as I hate alteration.

No one ever thought it was altered. And people shouldn't go looking at everything thinking its been changed and jumping to conclusions. Chances are the previous versions were the ones that were incorrect. Not everything is a mistake.

It looks a bit blue looking at times, but the director seemed to favour that sort of lighting at that point.

According to Henenlotter, most of the early prints and video releases of Basket Case were too dark and he insists that he didn't shoot it that way.

THAT was the point in the screenshots and tests... to find a fact, not a guess. I also figured it was actually correct on the new Arrow release, but I like to be sure. With Arrow's reputation I almost was certain their release had the right look and colors, but when 2 separate releases look quite different I start wondering. It is not wrong to question whether a release has been tampered with, after all... companies do it all the time without a disclaimer. Would rather be safe than sorry. I would think a fellow blu and horror fan would too. Instead of criticizing me for doing tests, maybe be glad in the fact that this release isn't screwed with like many releases are?? Many blu fans have found errors in films due to looking at them closely and asking questions. I don't see how that is so wrong to you, to me it is wrong to alter a film from it's original intent. That's not the case here, but it could have been and I stomped out the questions. End of story.

PS: Where did I jump to conclusions? As you can read both my posts and I gave off the "maybe it's been altered, maybe it's just been done correctly for the first time" vibe. I never stated it was wrong. So I didn't spread false facts around and confuse fans. Research, man, research. Not trying to start a beef with you, just explaining my findings and there was no need to act like this question was useless.

Given that it is a BD representation of the MoMA presentation where Henenlotter appeared at its unveiling, I am inclined to believe this is how he wants it to look.
