I saw this in Dolby Cinema last night. It will definitely shine on disc. But with a different production team, it's aesthetic is almost opposite the original. The most obvious example being set in mostly sunny days, whereas the original was mostly rainy nights. This is more akin to a Transformers movie.

As for the movie itself, it's mediocre. Without Guillermo Del Toro at the helm, it loses a certain charm. John Boyega tries his hardest to make it up, but all the other characters are one-dimensional, and lack the quirks GDT usually fills his supporting and background characters with. And because of that, the world feels less lived in and more generic. They are just coasting on the world-building done in the first and are disinterested in exploring it further. Luckily, the plot flows naturally from the first without regurgitating the same story, throwing in a twist here and there. If you go in with your expectations low, looking only for a mindless popcorn movie with Transformers-level spectacle, you won't be disappointed.

Disappointing to hear. I really want this movie to be awesome like the first one. Looking forward to seeing it soon.

In just came out from seeing it, and for the most part what you say is true.

I think it will be a beautiful 4K. The story naturally flows from the first, and with the lowered expectations I had going in I was entertained about as much as the first film.

It's funny, predictable for the most part, but not quite as emotionally satisfying as the first.

8/10. Thumbs up!

seeing it today at noon, I don't care about the emotionally satisfying stuff I just want to be entertained and I have no doubt that I will.

Yeah I had a problem with the movement of the Jaegers. They seemed to go from lumbering movement (which is how they should move given the size) one second to smooth movement the next (the knock knock moment at the beginning). It pulled me out of the moment a little. But all that said, it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Pretty fun time.

I hated this movie and I hated the visual style of it too. Pacifim Rim is one of my favorite UHD discs, but I don’t think I’ll be picking this one up. Which is disappointing. I had very low expectations, but I was at least hoping for a good looking movie. Frankly, I thought this film just looked ugly.

Agreed, this will never have a place in my collection. I’m a big fan of the original and this was just terrible.

and the quality of the special effects ranging from poor to very good doesn't help either.

Enjoyed it for what it was. Nowhere as good as the first but it was never going to be. I’ll pick up the 4K.

Wow what a divisive movie!!!

I loved the first movie, and just saw the second one in imax 3D.

It has more humour, and is brighter and lighter than the first movie, most action scenes are during the day.

I still loved it. Immensely. I’d give it a 8/9 out of 10.

Different tone than the first movie, but TONS of fun, great story and twists, awesome FX in imax 3D.

I kinda noticed that in the trailers, that they seemed more like agile exosuits instead of mechanical engineering.

Wow, this was a total dud. I foolishly went in without reading reviews. Lacks the GDT aesthetic and humor, generic cast of younger actors going through the motions and the FX work is mediocre as others have noted. It feels like they took all the recent 'teen rebel' cliches and just added the kaiju plotline.

They cheaped out on music too, instead of Ramin Djawadi whose score made the original such a classic, they hired the guy who composed Geostorm and Terminator Genisys. Remember those awesome scores?

Also, it panders to the Chinese audience so expect Chinese stars and scenes in Mandarin for no apparent reason.

Reminded me of Great Wall with worse FX and no Matt Damon. Tian Jing is the actor with the CGI face from that film as well.

It's generic. Look up the composer - he's no Ramin Djawadi. I'm guessing they couldn't afford him since he is pretty popular now.

This movie looks like they cut corners all round.

Saw this yesterday with my two sons and we all enjoyed it. I went in with low expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised. Not as good as the first, but it had some great battles and set pieces. Wished they could have used the exact same theme music for the closing credits as the first one, as that is one of my favorite film soundtracks.

Will be looking to pick it up on 4K & 3D. Just waiting to see if we get any international combos or if Best Buy will release a 4K SteelBook.

The first movie was a fun monster movie that took itself just the right amount of serious and the monsters were genuinely scary with the destruction they brought to civilization. This one felt like an episode of Agents of Shield in the first season. It was cartoony, didn't feel serious hardly ever, poor character development, and badly relied on references from the events of the first movie.

Saw this today and yeah it was bad! The story was weak and there was a lot of "comedy" that just did not work. Characters were boring and first half there was no Kaiju at all!
Got first on UHD and BD but will skip this on any format.
