Agreed. I absolutely loved what they did with the backdrops. Very tastefully done and I can't imagine it being handled any better.

Target has a new 5-disc release now, available only in stores. I picked it up a few days ago as a gift. It has all the same content as the Amazon box set, and comes with the mini-book, but drops the other junk. It also has a new lenticular slipcover that looks fantastic.

Yep, it's pretty darned good. The look of the movie lends itself to effective 3D to begin with, what with all of those long-lensed close-ups and mediums blurring out the background. They resisted the urge to open up the backdrops, adding (as you rightly say) subtle depth instead of attention-grabbing 3D vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. That said, they did allow themselves one such indulgence, when Dorothy and the gang enter the Wizard's hall and it stretches on forever, but it works perfectly for the scene.

This might sound like an odd thing to say, but IMO the best conversions work so well because they don't try and push the tech too hard; they layer the image as if that's how it was shot in 3D to begin with, i.e. it looks natural, with strong/medium/weak 3D depending on the scene. It isn't just constant eye-popping depth for the sake of it, nor is it a succession of flat, dull cut-out images.

Very, very nice.

I had the same reaction! This is the best conversion I've seen to date. I don't want the studios to go back and convert every classic film into 3D but this film certainly benefits from the process. It might be blasphemy to say this but I think the film works a bit better in 3D.

Thumbs up

The 3D in Wizard of Oz was nicely converted, agreed. I'd say medium 3D most times, with some mild 3D shots, and some close to strong 3D shots here and there. Very nice.

Wizard of Oz is one of the most colorful movies I've seen over the years, with some amazing production values and special effects for the late 1930s when it was filmed. The scene with the Twister in the distant background kept me wondering how they did that effect. Visually, Wizard of Oz is a landmark film in the history of cinema.

The 3D was nicely done on the backgrounds, as many were painted flat backdrops that were brought into dimension with 3D, for the trees in particular.

Actually rewatched this in 3D last night, but admit I had trouble staying awake through the whole film, mostly because it was time to rest. The green witch and that red mist of hers looks great. I'm sure the imagery in this film has inspired many filmmakers over the years.

Sorry if this has been discussed or not here but is the aspect ratio situation with this 3D disc correct ? Do i have to watch this 3D disc with the bars on the side or is the zoom feature the only way to get rid of that ?

You have the privilege to watch the 3D conversion in its correct aspect of 1.33:1. That is with the bars on each side.

If you get an old tube 4:3 TV you can eliminate the bars.

Just watch it in a darkened room. The bars are less noticeable (to me) that way.

I won't call you crazy, it just affects my eyes cause they are so trained to watch full screen. Oh well what are ya gonna do ! This was always a fun movie but thankfully it wasn't my favorite !

Retrain them. That's why the dark center portion of the eye is called the pupil.

Another reason to own this - pq is better than the 2D blu-ray. Color and detail are superior on the 3D disc. Compare them and you'll see.
A must-have at that price!

I watched this not long ago. I really like the effect and the decision to add stereo depth to the painted backdrops.

I know this has been posted here before but I just want to raise the profile for those who haven’t read it.

Great article on the conversion of this classic movie: http://www.studiodaily.com/2013/09/c...d-of-oz-to-3d/
