I hooked up my 805 and polks last night. WOW I am impressed. the only thing I do not like is the connection to the 805. thinking about grabbing some banana plugs to secure things up. I looked at bestbuy.com and they have several options. which do I need? also if I was going to use them on the speaker side which kind do I need?
thanks guys |

Some do fit better than others but I agree they are primarilly for ease of use. Personally, I've used bananas, spades and bare wire on speakers. If there's a difference in actual sound quality... It's so slight I can't detect it. Spades are more solid, bananas are easier... the only reason I've found, as to why most in the industry prefer not to use bare wire, is that over time (years), the bare wire oxydizes from the open air and you lose much of the highs they say.
The other reason why bare wire is not overly recomended, is that sometimes, if loosely connected, a strand can touch metal and cause the receiver or amp to shut down, going into protection mode. Strands can loosen up if the wire itself is moved around a lot and the sound can then either pop in and out or fade in and out. Anyway, that's what I've heard and also experienced. |

Agreed; great advice all round! My current speaker cables use banana plugs, but I'll be sure to specify spades from now on.

Yeah I have spades on my speakers & on the Amp I have Banana plugs the ease of use is great the cables themselves are magnetically shielded which is good, does it improve the sound, well I cannot detect a difference in sound quality having said that I have then cause:
1. Ease of use. 2. I dont like bare wires cause of oxidation. 3. Magnetically shielded. 4. Good quality cables look great & they are very well assembled. I have Airloc plugs: http://www.futureshop.co.uk/qed-xtub...ble-p-960.html |

I bought these a while back to make a few jumper cables. Can be crimped on or soldered, although I soldered them on and sealed it up with a little heat shrink tubing............

I got some great banana plugs at Radio Shack for not much more than MonoPrice, and I had them immediately. I got them, finally, because it is just nearly impossible to get behind your receiver sometimes and hold speaker wire in one hand, while you tighten the post with the other. With the banana plugs, you just need one hand, and it's "plug and play"!

I've never used anything but bare wire. The oxidation thing, as stated above, can occur on any exposed metal parts. A couple of months ago I bought some banana plugs from Monoprice, but haven't used them yet. They will go on the next time I need to monkey with the AVR. I will leave bare wires on the speakers.
The biggest disadvantage to bare wire that I have experienced is that some of the bare wire ends break off after connecting/disconnecting, then you have to take the time to restrip. It will become a huge issue, in the event you have to troubleshoot an AVR or similar and swap things in and out a few times. |
