USA Abel Ferrara's The Addiction (1995) coming from Arrow - June 26, 2018

Quote:
The mid-nineties were a fertile period for the vampire movie. Big-name stars such as Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy flocked to genre, as did high-calibre filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, veterans Wes Craven and John Landis, independents Michael Almereyda and Jeffrey Arsenault, and up-and-comers Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro. Amid the fangs and crucifixes, Abel Ferrara reunited with his King of New York star Christopher Walken for The Addiction, a distinctly personal take on creatures of the night.

Philosophy student Kathleen (Lili Taylor, The Conjuring) is dragged into an alleyway on her way home from class by Casanova (Annabella Sciorra, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) and bitten on the neck. She quickly falls ill but realises this isn’t any ordinary disease when she develops an aversion to daylight and a thirst for human blood…

Having made a big-budget foray into science fiction two years earlier with Body Snatchers, Ferrara’s approach to the vampire movie is in a lower key. Shot on the streets of New York, like so many of his major works – including The Driller Killer, Ms. 45 and Bad Lieutenant - and beautifully filmed in black and white, The Addiction sees the filmmaker on his own terms and at his very best: raw, shocking, intense, intelligent, masterful.

Cool. Never even heard of The Addiction before this thread, but I am a fan of Ferrara's other films - so I will definitely check this out. I didn't think his Invasion film (1993) was that terrible, so it will be interesting to see a horror flick he did a couple of years later.

Unfortunately, many of Ferrara's films (especially his more obscure ones) are difficult to get ahold of on home video - so it's nice to see releases like this.

Phenomenal news.

One of my favorite movies... and one of Ferrara's best.

I've only ever watched it in crappy quality on Youtube too.... this is gonna be great.

And holy crap, those extras. This sounds awesome:

Yeah, I think that new & exclusive doc puts this release over the top. That's the kind of extra you wish for on every release. I'm blind buying this one.

Along with Bad Lieutenant and King of New York this is prime Ferrara, shot in beautiful B&W. Remembering this film reminds me that I still need to catch Michael Almereyda's indie vampire film Nadja, which came out around the same time and was executive produced by David Lynch; gotta love vampire movies that think outside the box, so to speak.

Excited about this one. I wish someone could put together the original cut of Cat Chaser, but I doubt that will happen.

Nadja overshadowed (no pun!) The Addiction back then, but it's nowhere near as good.

The Addiction has some problems but it is one of Ferrara's best films

Let's hope The Funeral and Bad Lieutenant are next. Lionsgate's BL looks nothing like how the film was intended to look.

I didn't see any...and I'm not really a Ferrara fan. This movie is his masterpiece, in my opinion.

Good film. I have the best DVD of it, the German. Though, it only has stereo track instead of the original 5.1 track. I will buy this

One of my favourite films of the 1990s, first saw this on BBC2 when I was 14 in '99. Since then I had to make do with online streaming. Really glad a spruced up blu-ray is finally hitting shelves.

Been wanting to see this for ages! Specs sound great though I do wish there was an interview with Nicholas St. John.

Hope New Rose Hotel eventually gets a release. (I might be the only person hoping for that...)

Remember watching this way back when and being left feeling a bit underwhelmed. Not a bad movie at all, just didn't live much of an impression on me. Time does change viewer's options/minds, so I'm all for giving this another try.

Nadja is great and I wish there was a BD of it. I used to have The Addiction on Laser Disc. Definitely gonna get this.

Well done, Arrow. This is a day 1 purchase for me as it is also coming out in the UK, my home land. There is quite a lot of content out there for Ferrara on blu ray these days. He has been well represented.
