"Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom"

"This film was restored from the camera negative scanned at 4K, and the Italian magnetic mix soundtrack."

https://www.focalint.org/focal-inter...oject-or-title

BFI were the only ones who released Salo in blu ray for region B. Other release was by Criterion region A locked. However, it was the very first blu ray that BFI did (if im not mistaken) and while it was a great overal 2 disc package with lots of extras, the movie transfer suffered from all sorts of digital manipulation. If I remember the story correct, Salo was scanned at 2k in Italy and only then sent to BFI team with all the inherited grain removal, edge-enhancement, halo... Not much could be done afterwards. Now, since it was scanned at 4k back in 2015, Im really curious how does it look and how much of an upgrade it would be! Im not sure if BFI are willing to again, but someone surely should grab it!

I have also read there was a new 4k restoration of "L'Atalante" by Jean Vigo (possibly already released in Japan), as well as completed or ongoing 4k restorations of his other few titles. Once again, Criterion release is the one who stands out the most as a whole package, but it was scanned at 2k, while Im not sure there is anything at all for us in region B.. This would be a great opportunity!

Yes, the Japanese Blu-ray of L’atalante is the 4K resto. Zero fo Conduct is supposed to be the 4K resto as well. Not sure of his other titles though.

Interesting that it’s a new 2k DCP of the 1997 restoration and not the more recent one undertaken by Deutsche Kinemathek around 2010.

And wasn’t there an even more recent attempt, funded by Hugh Hefner around 2012?

Now why would Hugh Hefner have decided to dip a financial finger into Pandora's Box? Do you think he had it confused with a film about something else?

I preordered Jarman set from Base but when I search their site I can't find it anywhere.
It's also no longer listed on Zavvi.
Anyone has any clue, what's going on?

It's still available at Amazon UK but way too overpriced!

It is still listed on Zavvi, but showing as "Sold Out" and therefore no longer orderable (mine is still in place, it seems). Clearly it's going to miss any of its announced release dates, including this coming Monday's (according to Amazon). But it will appear sooner or later, whenever the BFI sorts out whatever problems they've encountered, about which they're keeping very tight-lipped...

I don't mind another delay, I'm just scared that Base might not deliver it.
That said after The Apartment disaster I wouldn't trust Amazon either.
It doesn't seem to be selling that well on Amazon #1474 in DVD & Blu-ray, so hopefully it's not the case of it being sold out already.

I think that's the same one. The later restoration was Martin Koerber's project, and seemed to be a more collaborative effort, involving Deutsche Kinemathek, Haghefilm Conservation, George Eastman House, Cinémathèque Français, Narodni Filmovy Archiv and Gosfilmofond via Cineteca di Bologna. Hefner was a major funder behind the project.

Hefner was a massive silent movie fan. Apparently he dedicated a night a week to watching silents.

He was a long-time critic of movie censorship (not surprisingly I guess), and Pandora's Box was heavily censored at the time. Doesn't really surprise me that he'd gravitate towards supporting something like this.

Eh what? PB is a pretty racy film in tone with its femme fatale lead and has some lesbian hints, sounds like just the sort of thing a Hefner would support.

So what is actually going on with the Jarman Box release ? Does anyone actually know ? The option to pre-order is gone on sites because it has passed the 26th March (the listed release date) but if some sites only charge once its been shipped it sort of still counts right ?

Most sites have it listed for April 2nd. My guess is there will be another delay.

I'm popping into Cardiff I can see what the state of play is with HMV. If they have them in the Stock room I'll have my answer.

They had the Jarman set in Tower Records today. Disappointed to see it has slim blue DVD cases as the imagery suggested it'd be a nice digipack but of course the content is what's important. Just looks a bit of a missed opportunity for classy packaging.

In Dublin, per chance? Do you remember the price?
