The cult classic French Comedy/Drama King of Hearts (1966) from director Phillipe de Broca will finally be getting a Blu-ray on June 12th, courtesy of Cohen Media Group. The film received a s new 4K restoration for its 50th anniversary.

I saw this film three or four times in the theater in Chicago when it first came out and I was going to Northwestern. An absolute gem. Also the first time I saw the wonderful, beautiful Geneviève Bujold.

One of the times I saw it was as part of one of the most unlikely double features of all time, with The Pawnbroker. That was just wrong.

Anyway, great news. I'll be first in line.

I saw this for the first time about a year ago at a film festival. Genevieve Bujold was there to introduce the film. I was in heaven listening to her speak (and just seeing her). As for the film itself, I was surprised that I had never seen it before, especially with the following that it has. I need to see it again to make an assessment as it didn't all stick with me the first (and only) time I saw it. I'll be buying this.

It's funny too because before we knew Cohen had it, it was rumored for a couple years that Criterion would release it, and if you look on Amazon, it's erroneously listed as being released by the Criterion Collection.

Really excited about this release. Never seen it. My dad, who really got me into film, cites this as one of his all-time favorites. I'll wait to watch it until the next time I visit my parents. He's been pestering me for months about when this and "The Spiral Staircase" will come out after I told him they got announced for BD. "The Spiral Staircase" is also one of his favorites.

The streaming version is available now at Vudu ($13.99). I just bought it. The video is from the recent restoration and looks excellent. It also has the proper English/French/German audio track with English subtitles.

I was looking forward to getting this but now I read that the Cohen release has forced English subtitles. In this day and age?

I also pre-ordered from Target and it was delivered today. I just popped it in to see about the subtitles, and yes, it looks like they're forced. But they only appear when the dialogue is in French (or German). When English is being spoken, there are no subtitles.
