I've changed my mind and now think it could refer to Der fröhliche Weinberg AKA The Grapes are Ripe. My reasoning is:
1) I'm pretty sure they are grapes and not currants. 2) There's more than one so if anything it's surely something with grapes or currants. 3) The Grapes are Ripe is a film from the 1950s so the sun lotion could be an extra hint there. ![]() 5) Grapes sat out in the sun would be ripening... We are still on the grape picture? I got it the second I saw it, it’s spelled out for you in black and white. It’s an obvious homage to the very famous quote by Galileo “The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.”
Following this thread, Camp Galileo is a world famous summer camp for children based in, wait for it, Oak Park! Now can you see it? What film was shipped to theaters under the code name “Oak”? That’s correct! Tree of Life. This makes it 5 newsletter clues in a row that clearly confirm Criterion is planning something HUGE for this film. |

Purchased this last year and re-watched it for only the second time. I actually enjoyed it more than the first time around.

If you haven't got them already, you should also get the Criterions of Wings of Desire & Buena Vista Social Club for him to sign as well

I don't blind buy (it's a budget thing) and haven't seen either. That said, I will be seeing both at the Harvard Film Archive in the next few weeks. As of now, the only Wenders films I've seen are the aforementioned Paris, Texas & The American Friend (which I didn't much care for).

Just got out of a 35mm screening of Virgin Suicides and, while I'm no professional and haven't been at this long enough to say I have anything like a well-trained eye, the caps of the Criterion release from DVDbeaver look closer to what I just saw, for the most part.
I looked at the caps beforehand so I'd have the images fresh in mind, and tried to note a few things in particular (e.g. the leaves in the tree and the white levels in the window and curtains, respectively for the next two I describe), and the shots of the youngest sister in the tree and James Woods in the classroom are much closer to the CC image, while the shot of Dunst laying in the field about split the difference between the two. Overall, the film definitely had a filtered look pretty much throughout, so if the CC BD is off, then the DVD (as shown in the DVDbeaver side-by-sides) is moreso. |

There could be some movement once the Janus tour of 24 Frames wraps up.

This is true; if you were going to wait until the next $20 sale, you should be able to get that for a resale, as Criterions retain their value pretty well, but you wouldn't be able to get full price (maybe you could for signed copies, but I wouldn't bank on it), and the next sale is months away.

Since the announcements this month will be for July, the month in which Bergman was born (and died, for that matter), what do we all think is going to happen?
Above all I'd love a release of Winter Light. Unless I'm missing something -- which is entirely possible, me being me and all -- there is no Blu-ray release of this film anywhere in the world at present. I seem to remember that Bergman himself was quite fond of the film. Any Bergman is good Bergman, of course. But this is the one that I would most like to see announced. |
