Mentioned this in the regular thread, but I would love a lenticular slipcover for this. Something like having the main characters on the cover then the lenticular effect could be of their avatars in the Oasis.

So much potential to do something cool for the artwork.

I just saw this and immediately after googled a list of all the references. Only caught about a third of them. I’ll have to see it again, and I’ll definitely be buying it.

I'm curious what scene they referenced in the Shining?, without giving anything away??

I might have to make an exception and go see this at the theater, usually only go once or twice a year nowadays but this one sounds like it qualifies as worthy.

It's a mix of scenes, mainly
[Show spoiler]Wendy discovering the stack of typewritten pages, the twin girls in the hallway, Jack and the naked hottie-turned-nottie, the elevator full of blood, and the snowy hedgemaze (that sounds like a euphemism) at the end
. Might've been others I forgot.

Am I the only one confused that this movie was filmed in 2k but mastered in 4k?

Seeing as 90% of was CGI, does it mean the CGI is 4k and the live action is 2k?

I have no idea but based on what I saw in the theater that might make sense. There was a big difference in picture clarity between the live action and CGI, which I actually thought was a benefit to the film. When in the real world the movie retained a nice filmic look that was reminiscent of older Spielberg movies, but when you're in the Oasis everything is super sharp and vibrant. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all looks on the the UHD.

Filmed in 2K? I thought at least the real-world stuff was 35mm?

Here are the specs from imdb.

ARRIRAW (2.8K) (source format)
Digital 3-D (source format) (Oasis Scenes)
Digital Intermediate (4K) (Master Format)
Dolby Vision
Panavision (anamorphic) (source format)
Spherical (some scenes)
Printed Film Format 70 mm
D-Cinema (also 3-D version)

It looks like they combined digital and analog.

Spielberg is a huge proponent of film and has stated he’ll never switch to digital. However, he’s used digital cameras for Tintin, BFG, and this, largely because they contain (or in Tintin’s case, are) scenes completely made of CGI, and they wouldn’t work with 35mm. Obviously, you could see the grain in the real world scenes vs the Oasis, minus
[Show spoiler]The Shining
scene).

I like that even a celluloid lover like Spielberg still understands the practicality of digital and uses both to tell his story. It’s similar to how Scorsese now shoots film on day and digital at night.

I never have and never do understand the reason for pre-ordering movies almost the same day that a movie comes out? I understand that the companies want to make money on this but its a bit to soon if you ask me. And I understand that there are many people who do this. Remember the days when it took 9-12 months for a movie to be out on VHS and with no pre-ordering. Now its a mere 3 months and a movie is out to buy and in some cases sooner. I'll only do this if its something that's been out years ago and are being re-released on 4K. Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump are a few I'd pre-order way in advanced.

Saw it yesterday. Going a second time Saturday. Was a hell of a lot of fun.

Day 1 purchase, mostly so I can freeze frame the shit out of it and find all the references. Bring forth the 4K HDR.

[Show spoiler]As someone who worked at Apogee/3D Realms for over 20 years, I was overjoyed to see Duke Nukem included in there. (It's not really a spoiler as such as it was in the trailer).
But I'd get it anyway, even if not for that.

I stopped believing the specs from IMDB. They get AR’s and Resolutions wrong on several entries. I run an IMAX subreddit, and we used to use IMDB as a source. They kept saying that certain films would have expanded AR’s for IMAX. So far they have been inaccurate for all but one release after Last Jedi came out.

Unhappy Can't you find a new cliche to hate 3-D with?

"3D sucks" is not only wrong it's TIRED!!! Vocabulary boredom!

If you saw "Ready Player One" in TWO-D instead of THREE-D you missed a hell of a ride!
Yesterday I saw the film in IMAX 3-D-- spectacular picture and sound. After I walked into the Dolby Room to see part of the film again in that format.

No contest! 3-D won!
