When Marnie Was There
When Marnie Was There - Special Edition

Quote:
A young girl is sent to the country for health reasons, where she meets an unlikely friend in the form of Marnie, a young girl with flowing blonde hair. As the friendship unravels it is possible that Marnie has closer ties to the protagonist than we might expect.

EDIT: Details of original releases with the faulty blu-ray disc inside spoiler tab (depending on player would either skip and/or constant disc drive seeking noises). The above links are of the re-releases on November 7th (originally released 3rd October) with new EAN/barcodes.

Unfortunately there appears to be an issue with the disc. Mentioned by TwiZone in the stickied Ghibli thread, their disc has freezing issues, and there's already a couple of Amazon reviews mentioning the same thing;

Quote:
hi love the film but have bought 2 of these blu rays now and both keep freezing my machine, have tried several other Blu rays with no problems, wondering if anyone else was having difficulty's
Quote:
As much as I love When Marnie Was There, I was disappointed to see that main film on my Blu-Ray copy kept freezing my player. I tried several other Blu-Rays in case there was a fault with my player, but they work perfectly fine. The special features on the Blu-Ray and the main feature on the DVD work fine however. Another Amazon reviewer has also pointed out this problem.

If this is a fault on Studiocanal's part, I hope they can rectify this soon!
A StudioCanal email for if/when your disc exhibits these issues;
[Show spoiler]info@studiocanal.co.uk

Actually I'd now recommend the following email, to technicolor who are handling the replacements;
Marnie.Mailbox@technicolor.com

(I'm actually still waiting for a reply to the studiocanal email, its now the 6th Nov and I sent it on the 4th of Oct But I have my replacement disc now, having received reply from technicolor email in less than 24hrs and replacement disc on Nov 2nd).

EDIT:
Mine arrived today (4th Oct), tried it in my PS3 & Toshiba BDX3200 player.
Both seemed to play the blu-ray without freezing/skipping (first couple of chapters), but the disc caused both players drives to seek back & forth. The PS3 sounded like it was doing it every 10-20 seconds, whereas with the Toshiba it was constant noise of the drive.

If I'd have played the disc any longer in the Toshiba, I would have been genuinely worried about it damaging the drive.
I sent a couple of audio clips of the players running the disc to the StudioCanal email I posted earlier, but its good to see them acknowledging the issue via the Facebook page (see post by richwood below).

_______________

EDIT2: I sent off my original disc to the freepost address (got proof of sending from post office), provided by the following email;
Marnie.Mailbox@technicolor.com
They received that, and sent out the fixed disc which arrived on the 2nd Nov. From my testing on my 2 main players the new disc played perfectly.

As posted on the main Ghibli thread.

It appears that they are aware of the issue with the disc. from https://www.facebook.com/studioghibliuk/

I watched it on Saturday and thought my PS3 sounded like the drive was working over time. Hopefully they can get a disc replacement program in place soon.

I'm sending mine back to Amazon. A faulty disk, rubbish packaging and a spine slashed slip are all reasons for me not wanting to keep it.

I just hold the top and bottom firmly, and gently shake it until it eeks out enough to grab. Stunning release, big thanks to everyone covering the repressing of this as I managed to find the right copy at a HMV which was ideal to pick out a perfect condition copy.

Watched this last night and thoroughly adored it. This might actually be one of my favourite Ghiblis!

I picked up the original Collectors Edition when it came out, but before getting around to watching it I heard about the technical issue that had marred the release. I was aware that there was a disc-replacement programme but never got around to jumping on it. That being the case I didn't want to watch a flawed disc so shelved it until I could pick up a cheap replacement disc.

Needing a makeweight for a HMV offer I picked up the repressed disc standard version yesterday.

Typically, I thought I'd try the original disc just to see what the problem was - of course it played perfectly fine! So, for the record, the Oppo BD-203 has no issues with this disc.

As for the movie itself - animation was typically gorgeous. The soundtrack was typically delightful. The English-language cast (Yes, I know, heathen....) was impressive. The story, was beautiful, and one I very much look forward to re-visiting in the future.

This, goes straight into the pile of animes that I keep aside for whenever someone questions why I watch 'cartoons' or, for whenever anyone generalises about anime = tentacle porn.

A stunningly beautiful release.

I'm still reading on Amazon that some people are still having issues with faulty discs. Can anyone here comment otherwise? I've held off getting it for this long out of concern.

For what it's worth my disc works just fine (the blu-ray that is, have never tested the DVD that comes included). I own the regular version and not the special edition by the way.
