Can we have the thread title changed? This makes it sound like AVC is superior to VC-1 when it's not...

Yeah, this it's not because AVC is the winner. It's because Paramount is the winner. Anything compared to a WB release is going to look superior. Everyone should know that by now.

That and Paramount utitlized an entire BD-50. WB ported over a low-bitrate encode from the HD DVD. It's not something you can compare.

I think you're mistaken. As far as I know, WB never released Zodiac on HD DVD in Europe, so they had no encode to port. Paramount is the only studio that ever released Zodiac on HD DVD and they don't provide their transfers to other studios.

Incorrect. WB released it in several parts of the world, including Australia.

I own the Australian Zodiac Blu-Ray VC-1 encode https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Zodiac-Blu-ray/8791/ and having watched it twice, I can't fault the transfer. It looks absolutely superb. Stunning visual HD presentation.

However, if the US Zodiac (AVC) ever comes up very cheap on Amazon, I will grab it.

Not long ago WB released Zodac (the original Paramount discs) and only put a new UPC sticker over Paramount's UPC. The discs were Paramount's discs. That release was part of a deal for WB to release Paramount titles. Paramount's upc on the paper sleeve is 097361313245 and WB's sticker over that, on the plastic, is 883929301225. They've probably exhausted the cases they received from Paramount and may have printed their upc on the paper.

edit: it's about $10 now. It looks like the market for the "out-of-print" Paramount disc collapsed.
