Road to Wacken The Movie (2011) Blu-ray 3D [Region B Locked]

I ordered this cheap thinking it was going to be a concert movie but on further investigation there seems to be something of a loose plot. It's gotten terrible reviews and IMDb lists four languages used so my expectations are at zero for this turning out to be a good buy.

I watched this today, it's a strange mix of short interview clips, live performances and the story of a fake band's road trip to Wacken. The Spanish dialogue comes across OK but the English dialogue is painfully stilted with the guy playing the manager delivering a mortifyingly cringeworthy performance. I was so glad nobody else was in the house to hear it, a black hole there from which no talent can escape.

The 3D is great though - the live stuff is presented mainly from a few fixed camera angles, giving you a real sense of being there. Dry ice and monitors pop-out vividly. There's the odd flat shot but most of this is good-looking native 3D.

Overall it would have worked better for me if the live performances weren't interrupted by the clips, those were varying degrees of annoying, but nowhere near as annoying as the acting. When one of the girls starts reading out the history of Wacken it's painful. This needed more songs and no fake band but on the plus side there are English subtitles on the disc for the Spanish dialogue and you can turn them off if you get annoyed by them clashing with the 3D. And there's some gratuitous nudity.
