I remember distinctly the plan was to release this as one film. And then getting closer to the release of what would be Vol. 1, they announced the split. And it was supposed to come out in February. And then it was moved to April.

I never thought these were great movies.

Entertaining...yes.

But not great films.

I didn't read everything, but there was some discussion about Uma Thurman's NYT interview and those posts have all been deleted so it probably got out of hand.

From what I remember reading about the film, when it was released, was that originally it was shot as one movie but due to the length and that the "house of blue leaves" scene was in the middle (leaving the rest of the film as rather anti-climatic) that it was decided to split the movie into two. I think that I read that it was suggested to QT by Harvey and that QT went with it, but begrudgingly so.

Personally, with a small re-write or re-edit of the film, it could have been made into a single release. But, just saying. I like both movies as they are. Very different types of movies. And, though I would like to eventually see The Whole Bloody Affair, I like the switch to black and white during some of the more violent scenes. I guess everyone knows by now that this movie was QT`s Shaw Brothers movie and tribute to Chang Cheh who used the same effect in some of his films. So, I also see it as an artistic decision and not just a censorship one.

Discussing the merits and safety of a stunt isn't politics. How about a moderator head over to any of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi threads and start deleting posts?

It was originally intended to be one film. I think the biggest change is that at the end of Vol. 1, we learn The Bride's daughter is still alive. In the original script, we find that out at the same time Uma's character does near the end of the film.

Well, now that he has come out with his story, I guess I jumped the gun a bit and I apologize. Still, the writer of that article needs to stop demonizing for more views. It’s a Weinstein article. It’s getting it anyway.

I knew that it had been written and filmed as one movie. But, I should have clarified what I meant a little bit better. What I meant was that with a little work or re-write/re-edit, it could have been made into a single film that would have been considered more commercial for them (the studio and Weinstein). Since, normally, when a movie is cut due to length, what they are actually saying is "make it more commercial/profitable". I think that The Whole Bloody Affair runs a little over 4 hours, right? Makes sense they would cut it into two films for a theatrical showing.

Kill Bill (parts 1 and 2) is still my favorite QT movie. But, personally, I think that after Pulp Fiction his movies got a little bloated and did not tighten up (more focused, perhaps) again until Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained.

Interesting point of view. Personally I felt Jackie Brown was pretty damn tight, Kill Bill for it's length is still a pretty well paced film. I personally feel that all of his films after Sally Menke died are where his real bloat comes into play (post Basterds). And I love Django and Hateful Eight, they just could have used Sally's editing. She had a way of convincing Tarantino that he didn't need every single thing he shot.

Is the scene where they are fighting in the Japanese bar with the dozens of guys supposed to freeze frame at certain parts? Or is my disc freezing? Happened twice so far. My first time watching this movie.

Has to be a bad disc, when I rewind there are parts that I missed. First disc in my collection to do that. Its the single disc US Miramax release. Disc is spotless, maybe the PS3.

Does anyone know if there is a bluray release with the color version of the crazy 88 fight?

Yeah, I don't really care that much about getting it re-cut to 1 movie.
But the color version of Vol 1 finally on Blu-ray? Yes, that's what I'm waiting for.
Own the Japanese Vol 1 DVD and 3 or 4 BD releases.

I mean priorities!

If Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, was put together on one BD, I would only get it if it were the Japanese cut (only available on Region 2 NTSC DVD).

But, I think first and foremost, the Unrated (AKA Japanese cut), needs to be brought to Blu-Ray. I can’t stand watching the B&W and seeing some of the “cuts cut” (‘cos even with the B&W, it is still censored!).

Link to Movie-Censorship.com report on differences

When watching on BD, I have the Japanese DVD ready to play and cut to it for the Crazy 88 sequence (when the Bride walks in with a captured Sophie), and then go back to the BD at the “light switch” moment.
But, even when doing this, I still miss out on the extra gore in the Oren-Ishi “Anime” origin story section and then later on, in the boot of The Bride’s car, when Sophie gets her other arm cut off (which is ambiguous in the R-rated). As shown in the Movie-Censorship.com report above under “Show Spoiler”

The Unrated Japanese Cut of Kill Bill Vol.1 getting a BD release (or UHD/BD) is imperative (or at least the International Cut should match the Japanese cut from the O-Ren Ishi Anime sequence onwards).

PS. I f*cking hate censorship. When it went B&W in the Aussie cinema where I watched KB Vol.1 (our R18+ is like US NC-17), I yelled “Boo. We paid for blood”

I'm of the understanding that it was intentionally supposed to be black and white though? Aside from the violence cuts if this is the case there's nothing wrong with it being released in black and white if that's indeed Tarantino's intent.
