I don't like going to theaters where people do everything except watch the movie. The "movie theater experience" died out in the 60's.

Late 80s for me. Last night I had a kid who wanted to shift me from my reserved seat. He had a 'group' coming and was organizing them. Typical entitled millennial brat. I didn't choose my seat weeks in advance to have some tosspot recommend I switch seats to accommodate his pals.

Guy who ended up sitting next me was trying to interact with the film Danced and leered towards the screen.

I would highly recommend going to see Avengers: Infinity War in a crowded theater this weekend.

I had so much fun last night. People were cheering and laughing throughout most of the movie, but, during the final 20 minutes, everyone was gasping out loud, and, toward the end, a few people around me were even crying. Everyone was basically stunned when the credits rolled and the post-credits played out. We were stunned in a happy way, but still stunned.

I actually love seeing the long-awaited big-name movies (Avengers franchise, Star Wars franchise, etc.) in crowded theaters on opening night, because I enjoy hearing other people's reactions when they are completely taken off guard by a moment.

On opening night of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the whole crowd around me basically zoned out in astonishment when
[Show spoiler]the Rebel ship flew in hyperspeed through the middle of the big Star Destroyer.

That was a golden cinema moment that I'll remember for a long time.

[Show spoiler]Spiderman's death
is the first time I was choking up and fighting back tears watching a movie. I choked up over that until I walked out of the theater. I heard some sniffles during that scene.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't had a bad moviegoing experience in well over a decade. People are routinely quiet and respectful of others when I go to the theater.

And how old are you? What are you doing to help the experience get better? I haven't been to a movie where someone was talking or eating loudly in almost ten years. I've been seeing at least one movie a week for almost three years now.

The experience seems to vary a bit based on the venue. For about 5 years, now, I've been a loyal patron to an AMC theater (formerly Carmike) that's about 45 miles away from my home. Prior to that, there was about a 15 year dry spell in which I stopped going to theaters. What made me stop going for a while was the general disrespectful atmosphere in the theater and ultimately a giant snuff stain in the middle of one of the screens. This was at my local theater (about 8 miles away).

After the dry spell, I decided to try higher-end theaters and discovered the atmosphere doesn't have to be dictated by the riff raff that attend the theater, so long as the staff are assertive enough to keep it in check. It's unfortunate that I have to travel that distance for a nice theater, but it's worth it.

In this theater, unpleasant experiences are rare, and quickly remedied by alerting staff of inappropriate behavior. I hate to have to be that way, but you can't give obnoxious children (age not being the definitive factor) any slack else they'll just escalate it. Again, this is rare in the theater I attend, primarily because the atmosphere is in line with an organized, respectful movie-going experience.

When I shell out the bucks to go to the theater, I expect appropriate silence, zero device glow, calibrated screenings and sound, and uniformed mature-acting staff. No one should have to accept anything less. If these are not afforded them, then I completely understand their disillusionment as I've been there before.
