I'm thinking Fox might be having production issues with this disc. It's very weird for them to not to deliver the following weeks new releases to stores on the Monday before (and sometimes even earlier). Their other stuff for next week came today but this is being delivered separately on Friday and they are only sending 2 copies. It's odd for them to send so few of any release let alone something that is definitely going to sell like Die Hard in 4K.

Would obviously prefer an A/V focused website's opinion on it, but the Forbes review makes this sound pretty good. Hope to pick it up soon!

Fox gonna Fox.

If it weren't for Lionsgate and Universal putting out uneven discs, Fox would take the cake for being the worst studio for this format so far. Shit, they probably still are.

I've been pretty happy with Fox's new-release stuff so far. Haven't seen ID4K so I dunno how their catalog stuff is.

ID4K is a great looking transfer, but encoding is a disaster.

Yeah I remember Geoff talking about macroblocking on that one, so I'm worried about that happening on Die Hard. Hopefully they've fixed that issue in their workflow.

Ironically enough Fox were one of 4K's loudest proponents when this format was still in the offing (while Sony's CEO was shitting all over it) but their catalogue support has been virtually non-existent, reflecting their approach to catalogue content in general right now.

It's like they've become infected with MGM's current malaise by dint of distributing their stuff, electing to release new movies only and licensing out everything else to indies...which would be great if indies were interested in 4K Blu but they're all keeping it at arm's length right now. Yes, MGM and Fox are streaming 4K stuff but that means jack shit because putting a stream out costs peanuts compared to a physical release.

It has all the themes and tropes of a Christmas movie.

It's the one movie I try my best to watch every Christmas.

Of the movies you listed only Christmas Vacation actually came out in December.

Saw some obvious blocking artifacts with The Greatest Showman, so I don't think anything is safe in Fox's stall.

I’ll probably still get it even though I don’t have a 4K tv. I can still watch the UHD Blu-ray via Xbox One S on my 1080p tv to enjoy the remaster. Someday though I’ll get a 4K tv. Probably Christmas.

Ya but Home Alone came out in November and not in the summer. Everybody has a right to their own opinion, but I don't think of Die Hard as a Christmas movie. I think of it as a summer blockbuster action movie.

Remaster? What's the basis for thinking that the HD BD will be anything but what's been already available for years?

He meant watching the 4K UHD on a 1080p tv for now, not the blu-ray.

Which is a bad idea since he'd be seeing an encode graded for HDR on a non-HDR display? Unless he's got the 203 or another UHD BD player that enables the stripping of HDR metadata?

Thanks but the bigger/more important point vis-a-vis watching the UHD BD with HDR on an HD display if you care about PQ is exactly what you're going to be experiencing . . . ?

Very nice upgrade over the BD, even without the HDR! Is this on a BD-100? Soz if already mentioned.

I have my 203 HDR setting on "Auto" which means its outputting SDR for me (non-HDR display). I'll try turning it flat "Off." The AFGM UHD BD looked obviously wrong and after a few moments and I didn't spend anymore time on the matter. I'll revisit this.

An interesting question is how much PQ daylight there is between a new pass from a 4K master to create a new/improved HD BD (Batman Begins) "versus" watching the UHD BD with HDR converted to SDR . . .

(BTW, within this "Video Output Setup" --> "HDR" setting, the 203 does have a "Strip Metadata" option.)
