for the love of all that is pure and holy! if the PS3 didn't have the ability to turn on and off remotely you'd be *****ing about that instead.

don't throw your remote around! and memorize the 3-5 button sequence if you're too damn lazy and impatient to walk 7 feet or switch TV inputs! is pressing the enter/X button twice really that much of a physical strain?
and don't blame sony because it never occured to any of their hard workers that such an uber level of loafing existed.

if you're really that bent on turning the PS3 off with just one click, get this.

Gee... we don't need an on/off button for a TV, either. Why don't we all just suck it up and use the on/off button on our TVs while we're at it?

All I'm asking is why there is not a simple on/off button on this remote, and WHY does it turn on by touching ANY button?
Gee...you seem to be one of the only people "accidentaly" hitting your remote.

Again... why no ON/OFF button on the remote, like every other remote made in this world?

Uh, it works fine dude. Its called "Dont leave the PS3 on auto play". Thats an annoying feature anyways because the movie takes over once you put it in.

Just tried my experiment too. Press PS button down and hold for 3 seconds. Hit enter twice and its cuts back off. Did not have to leave my chair, did not have to mess with the tv. In the time youve wasted in this thread you could have easily figured that out.
It not just me, it is anyone in my room that accidentally does it ALL the time. Now maybe you've been wasting time in this thread, but please speak for yourself or don't post.

So you're telling me that not having an ON/OFF button on the remote is an "OK" thing?

Would you like it if you had to make three keystrokes blindly (on a menu that could get screwed up) to turn off your TV? Open your garage door? Etc?

I type without looking at the keyboard, how hard is it.

There are two scenarios here:

1) (Most of us) keep the remote out of harms way

2) Leave it laying around so the cat and guests can hit it, then go onto forum and complain instead of stowing it better.

I'd never dream of throwing one remote against another, all this proves is that you're careless and continue to make the same mistake even though you know what will happen.

Here's a radical idea, put the remote in a place where the cat won't step on it

Dude, you're lucky you don't live in a state where "remote abuse" is a felony or you could end up in prison. And I hear that the other prisoners don't go easy on remote abusers. Show your remote the dignity and respect it deserves and it will be a loyal member of your family.

But seriously, you may well have a defective remote.

To answer the initial question... I think, I do think it is odd that the PS3 remote (not the sixaxis controller) does not have an on/off button, but not a deal breaker.

i have accedently turned on my PS3 with remote, i let it boot for a while then use the face button to turn it off.

It's just funny how you must hold down the PS button on SIXAXIS to turn on PS3, but any tap on on any of the Blu-ray remote's buttons will instally turn on your PS3. Not good if your finished watching somthing before bed, then you kick the remote that still on your bed, beep PS3 turns back on.

It can be easily fixed by a firmware update that changes the remote power on funtion to holding PS button for a second or two. Simple.

If you got kittys that have easy acces to PS3 to beable to turn it on, I sugest that you move the PS3 to another location, because I would be more conserned about cat hair cloging the air vents, than Ps3 being turned on unattended.

That is pretty radical dude , but I'd like to keep it where I keep the rest of my remotes, between my couches.

(because sarcasm is hard to convey through type, allow me to tell you now that the following is purely for comedic purposes (at least in my mind) and is not intended to insult, belittle or mock anyone who is annoyed by the PS3 turning on accidently)

Here is an additional radical idea:
Trip the breaker for the room with the PS3 whenever you are not using it to ensure that no power can get to it. Better yet, call the power company each morning before you leave to tell them to cut the power to your house for the next couple of hours. Just think of all the eletricty you can save

Dude, huh? Riiiiight

So much for rectifying your problem. Keep those remotes right where they are and deal with the cats stepping on them.

Slightly more radical than moving the remotes, but it seems like it would do the trick.
