Default Tree of Life Extended Cut coming to Criterion

50 minutes of new or alternate content, although the theatrical is still considered the "director's cut."

For the love of God, let Criterion get the rights to include every "Voyage of Time" edit on this set.

Here's hoping Fox does the right thing after Criterion financed the home media release and we can screen the new 'arrangement' at the Alamo:

Quote:
“These films are very much living things for Terry,” Becker says. The director — whose last feature, “Song to Song,” takes places in the Austin music scene — identifies strongly with the way musicians create, embracing the organic way their work is allowed to evolve over time. “A song has a life after it’s recorded — it is a beginning, not an end for musicians. Nobody expects Bob Dylan to go out on the stage and play the song the same way every night.”

And I'm already confused. The article mentions 50 minutes of new footage added to the 139 minute film, then refers to the new version as 179 minutes. 139 + 50 = ?

Might be a more extensive re-edit instead of just adding new scenes. So there could be 50 new minutes but 10 old minutes got taken out, so net gain is 40.

First foray into 4K releases, please? Either way, I'll be buying it.

a standard bluray edition AND maybe Criterion's first foray into 4K UHD ... please? 'Voyage' deserves it's Dolby Vision color grading and Atmos mix (which is do-able on standard bluray anyways)

Cool, but those 50 minutes better not be more stuff like Sean Penn running his hand through tap water and wandering around.

I'd rather see 50 minutes cut than added. Better yet, cut 139 minutes.

The article later states that it’s 188 minutes.

(A) so there IS a 5 hour cut that WAS released?

Or

(B) That there is NO 5 hour cut?

If (B), why did Lubezki say Malick completed 8 hour cut? And working on 6 hour cut?

Becker & Lubezki saying conflicting things
