USA C&C Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition OUT NOW!

Quote:
"Electronic Arts announced today that the Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition will be bringing the Red Alert universe to the PlayStation 3 for the very first time this March 2009.

“Our team has been dedicated to bringing the RTS genre to console gamers and we are excited to have this opportunity to introduce PS3 owners to Command & Conquer,” said David Seeholzer, Development Director at EA Los Angeles. “The PS3 is a very powerful platform, and the extra time we have had in development has helped us create the ultimate console RTS experience, with better graphics, improved performance, a ton of extras and some nice exclusive perks that cannot be found on any other version of Red Alert 3.”

Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 blends the over-the-top humor and fast, fluid and fun gameplay the series is known for with exciting new innovations for the RTS genre, including fully co-operative, story driven-campaigns and an unprecedented emphasis on naval gameplay. PLAYSTATION 3 gamers will navigate the C&C style, action-packed gameplay via the Command Stick 2.0 interface, an intuitive control system that allows gamers of all skill levels to easily and efficiently command their units on the battlefield. Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition also packs in a tremendous amount of bonus content, which includes the following:
  • Five exciting new multiplayer maps
  • Behind the scenes videos and trailers, including Raising the Iron Curtain Documentary, From Pens to Pixels, the Girls of Red Alert 3, Bloopers & Outtakes, the Red Alert 3 Remix and many more!
  • PS3 exclusive Command & Conquer TV programming, including PS3-dedicated BattleCast™ PrimeTime and a special episode of Command School focused on tips, tricks and strategies From The development team
  • n-depth profiles on all the Red Alert 3 Units

Hi all, my name is David Seeholzer and I am the Senior Development Director for Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition. You might be asking yourself why we are calling it the ‘Ultimate Edition’ of Red Alert 3. I wanted to share some insight into the cool extras and bonus content we are making exclusive for you guys, as well as shed a little light on the development process and our future plans for the title on PS3.

Quote:
Red Alert
Quote:
found its humble beginnings over a decade ago on PC and has since seen 2 sequels, several expansion packs, and now, is making its debut on the PS3 console. Fortunately the power of the PS3 and the Blu-ray medium has afforded us some extra luxuries that weren’t available to us previously.
Quote:
The most noticeable difference you’ll see in the Ultimate Edition on PS3 is an increase the visual quality of the game so that it truly stands up to HD Blu-ray definition. A perfect example of this is what you will see in the game’s water. One of the huge new features you’ll see in Red Alert 3 is an increase in naval warfare and amphibious units. Most strategy games in the past have never paid much attention to navy but we’re bringing it to the center. As such, we paid close attention to detail with it and ensured that we maximized its visual aspects, without penalizing game performance even under the most intense of battles.

Quote:
Another great thing about the PS3 is its use of Blu-ray. We are taking as much advantage as we can of the extra storage space, cramming it full of exclusive features and in game content, including some exclusive new maps for you wage you and your buddies to skirmish battles on over PSN. There is also a ton of videos, giving you a behind the scenes look at the development of the game and the making of our live-action cinematics, a hallmark of the Command & Conquer series. Red Alert 3 features one of the biggest casts in the history of games, including legends like Tim Curry, George Takei, J.K. Simmons, MMA superstars Randy Couture and Gina Carano and a host of starlets including Jenny McCarthy, Kelly Hu, Autumn Reeser and Gemma Atkinson (speaking of which, my personal favorite extra is a look at the “Women of Red Alert 3” video we’ve included). Our Command & Conquer TV team also produced two episodes of the network’s favorite programs, BattleCast PrimeTime and Command School which are totally dedicated to the Ultimate Edition. And to top it all off, we’ve also included the entire Red Alert 3 soundtrack for your listening pleasure, including the theme song “Hellmarch.”

Quote:
Red Alert 3 also brings another first to strategy games: a fully co-operative campaign. With the PlayStation Network, you and your friends will be able to play through the entire campaign together. There was a strong effort to make sure that each mission was designed for two commanders working together and in making sure that the experience was engaging and challenging. And with the extra time we were given,we were also able to fine tune and balance each mission specifically for the console to ensure that players have the best experience possible.
Quote:
Of course all of this doesn’t matter if you don’t have a fun game and one of the most important aspects of a fun RTS is how you control your army. After all, you can’t conquer the battlefield, if you can’t get your tanks in first gear. The dev team here has been working on console RTS since Battle for Middle Earth II on through Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath, all for the Xbox 360. Now we’re proud to be bringing what we think is the smoothest, easiest-to-grasp control set up we have ever designed to the PS3 with the CommandStick 2.0 interface. You’ll be able to easily group units, jump around the battlefield, stage attacks and defenses, and manage their bases, all with a couple flicks of the thumbsticks. Once you get your hands on it, you will be crushing noobs in no time.

Quote:
We’re also planning on supporting Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition through the PlayStation Store and with downloadable content. Even now as we are finishing the game, we have a team hard at work on content packages and live support for the PS3. We plan on releasing multiple map packs through the PS Store; in fact, the first one will be available for free right about the time the game comes out in March. Following that we should have some real cool content for you to download in the future, but for now check out the Red Alert 3 page on the PS Store for the Ultimate Edition Theme and our first sneak peak trailer of the PS3 version.
Quote:

This is the first classic RTS for the PS3, and the first strategy game that the development team at EA Los Angeles has brought to this console. We are all proud of how it turned out and we can’t wait to hear what you, the fans, think of it. Please send us your comments and leave us feedback, we love hearing from you and your suggestions!
Check us out on the PS Store, or go to www.redalert3.com for more info.
Thanks again fellow Comrades, see you on the Battlefield!

Update March 5, 2009 by Shin-Ra

IGN Hands On
Quote:
http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/959/959834p1.html

US, March 5, 2009 - There is a serious drought of real-time strategy games on the PS3. While there's been an explosion of tower defense games through the PlayStation Network, there haven't been any classic RTS games where you establish bases, manage resources and tech trees and eventually eliminate your opponent from the map. Electronic Arts is planning on addressing that drought of strategy titles later this March as they prepare to release Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition. A few days ago, EA stopped by to show off the title, which has been enhanced to take advantage of the PS3's power as well as add in extra content.

As a big fan of the C&C universe, I've spent a large amount of time playing these titles on my PC using the keyboard and mouse, which allows for quick response to firefights as they break out. So I will admit that I was somewhat concerned when it was confirmed to me that the Ultimate Edition wouldn't support mouse and keyboard for a control scheme. However, I was told that the design team spent a lot of time focusing on making sure that the console version would be pretty close to the classic control scheme for RTS games. The tutorial segments from the PC with the "story" between tanks for all three factions returns with button commands that provide the basics of play, and thanks to a number of controller shortcuts, players will find that the DualShock will work much like the hot key commands on a keyboard. For instance, hitting the square button allows you to instantly select all of your units that are onscreen, while circle deselects all of them and X directs movement or attacks. By chaining together different button presses, you can perform key moves like quickly setting waypoints or snapping to unselected targets so your forces can promptly destroy them. You can also hit the L1 button and the directional pad to instantly issue commands to your co-commander to help you with your attacks within story missions.

Akin to the 360 version of the game, players use the R2 button to access a radial menu, which is broken up into different categories like production structures, units and vehicles, along with repairs and other options. By rotating the analog stick and hitting X to confirm a choice, you proceed into the next category until you reach the item you want and are allowed to place a structure or queue up units. Impressively, it's possible to perform most commands within three button presses or less, making it quite responsive and extremely easy to get the hang of. In fact, within two minutes of starting up a brand new skirmish match, I'd gotten so accustomed to the mechanics that I'd built the first three buildings of my base, pumped out a squad of soldiers and started launching raids against my computerized opponent. While I didn't attempt to use any of the more advanced techniques, I was relatively comfortable using the basics, and it was nice to know that the command list at the bottom center of the screen was contextual to give me a sense of what I could do, such as being able to use R1 to toggle special abilities of units.

Of course, one of the hazards that can erupt gameplay, particularly with RTS titles that migrate from the PC to the console, is that the titles can suffer from significant slowdown during major battles, as well as weaker visuals. Surprisingly, I didn't find that to be the case within the Ultimate Edition, which was quite striking considering that this was a large problem for the 360 version. However, the framerate appeared to be extremely stable regardless of the amount of destruction or enemies onscreen. This was highlighted during a mission for the Empire of the Rising Sun, where the player is in control of the Shogun Executioner, a gigantic mech with energy katanas. As it performed its special attack, explosions erupted around it without a single hesitation at all. What's more, I was told that the PS3 version received a few additional visual improvements, so environmental elements like cliff edges or water within the game looks much better in the Ultimate Edition than on the PS3.

Speaking of the Ultimate Edition, the PS3 version will receive all of the same elements that were included within the Premiere Edition for the PC. This means that you'll receive the blooper reel, the soundtrack, and other videos, as well as a specific Battlecast and Command School for PS3 owners. While that might not seem radically new, the Premiere Edition was produced in limited numbers only for North America, so the Ultimate Edition will be released to a wider audience. What's more, the PS3 version will also receive Unit Profiles that gives extra information about each sides forces – a feature included in the PC build that was excluded from the 360 version due to space. While multiplayer matches are still limited to up to four players, you'll have full PSN friend list support to instantly launch into a skirmish or set up a co-op campaign. I was told that the PSN support would also potentially extend to downloadable content in the future, depending on the demand from users. Finally, the PS3 version will come with 50 trophies, exactly the same as the achievements on the 360, so generals looking to boost their collection will have plenty of milestones to gain in a few weeks when Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition is released.

A few months ago, developers of the latest Command & Conquer game, revealed that the delayed PS3 version of the game would feature "really cool things" that take advantage of the "high-defness of Blu-Ray." Well, a listing on the EA Store reveals what those things will be.

Now dubbed the Ultimate Edition, the PS3 version will include a ton of new videos on the disc not found in previous versions. Find bloopers, behind the scenes, and developer strategy videos. There will also be brand new battleground maps. You'll be able to access the soundtrack from the game, and study with a built-in Unit Profiles video encyclopedia. To top it all, there's an exclusive HD version of a video feature, "Girls of RA3," which focuses on the women featured in the game.

With all this added content, the PS3 version of Red Alert indeed looks to be the ultimate version of the game. When this much content and effort is put into a port, we don't mind it coming a little later than on other platforms.
sounds good! nice find dk!

Totally sweet. I was going to get this game for the smeesmixty but I will definitely swoop up on this, this is the treatment delayed releases should get, not a sub par port.

Keyboard and mouse support? Come on! You need hotkeys to effectively play RTS games!

I'll get this, I refuse to purchase the PC version because of the DRM (think spore), the PS3 version I highly doubt will have the same restrictions.

That was a rumor that was spread, they delayed it, one of the devs said they wanted to give the ps3 version the attention it needed so they wanted to wait until they were finished working on the 360 and pc version which would free many of the dev members...

This was covered in a previous thread...

but now we get the ULTIMATE EDITION lol

In Play magazine they said the console controls were good.
Not as good as a PC, but good overall. They said EA has made vast improvements. They gave the game a good review, they don't give scores.

Sweet! I love the franchise, I was really disappointed when I heard it got delayed. I normally could care less for behind the scenes extras and whatnot, but I'll probably check those ones out. I know one of the female voices is Gina Carano - that girl from the tv show "Gladiators" and Elite XC mma fighting.

If you can't take out a 140lb woman you might need to hit the weights
She is hot though. I'd roll around with her

Not as good as a PC, but good overall. They said EA has made vast improvements. They gave the game a good review, they don't give scores.
From what I understand, the Kane's Wrath/C&C3 360 development was a large push for making the console commands 'good for RTS'.

I can see it working pretty well, but well, this comrade will still perfer the board and mouse.

Two words: Muay Thai.

However, she doesn't have much presence in the cutscenes, I believe it may improve with Uprising though.

I meant that figuratively as to exepmlify how awesome of a fighter she is, 12-1-1 in Muay Thai one of the only americans to capture a muay thai championship belt. 7-0 record in MMA.

And who says that I wouldn't let her win.
