Perhaps you should watch the film first and understand the context of the character?

I really liked Enfys. her story was pretty cool. Carries the tradition of the Vocoder and mask hiding identity. If there was any qualms of character I had,
[Show spoiler]It would have been that the initial rag - tag pilot in solo was a Rocket Racoon cash-in, similar gruff voice of course. But who really started the beastly co-pilot craze in the first place

So I'd label that a minor quibble.

I really enjoyed this.

Solid 8.5/10 for me.

Considering the train wreck that this was expected to be pre-Howard, it holds up remarkably well.

Ehrenreich is fantastic as Han, and as mentioned on the previous page, the relationship/dynamic with Chewie really is the engine powering the movie forward. Much kudos too to Glover who absolutely nails Lando - the first lines out of his mouth, honestly if you're not looking at the screen you'd swear it was Billy Dee. Harrelson too, great, as is Thandie Newton, sadly dispatched early though. Wasn't overly convinced by Emilia Clarke's character, and Paul Bettany was in full on OTT villain mode.

Story flowed well considering. Didn't really suffer a Rogue One problem in that regard.

Darth Maul, yeah, worked for me, but then I'm a big fan of the character, so to see him on-screen again, yes please.

Didn't mind the Boba/Jabba absence, that's clearly where they're headed if the do another one, and it really is set up for another one.

So far, two movies down, each 'story' has been better than the respective trilogy movie IMO. Tighter stories, not weighed down with trilogy baggage. Following on from this, Kenobi could be another cracker, hopefully. I'm more looking forward to that than Episode IX tbh.

Pretty pleased with how this one turned out.

I can understand many of your points, I'm programmed to use tags, even if not necessary

[Show spoiler] I can only offer that Han's piloting was born out of necessity, as Han explains about his father constructing Correlian ships stirring his passion and knowledge about such freighters, and then of course using this skill set as a mechanism for survival in the wars (so that he could return to his love, but also cast your mind as to why and how SOLO got his surname, at some point, he separates himself from his family, was there shame aside from death?), out of his experiences, his piloting appears to be what he would believe his main / if only selling point

Han never claimed to make the kessel in record time, it was the falcon if I'm not mistaken, at least in the OT.

Does the movie begin with "a long time ago" and then the Star Wars logo and then the few paragraphs for the crawl or does skip all of that and immediately go to the crawl?

The film is ok, but not fantastic. Worth seeing once, but the worst of the new films.
Lando is the best thing imo.

But I really hated the way they shoe-horned those ****ing die in! Now suddenly that is a trait to the character? Really?
Also I really hated the naming scene! L3 really didn’t work for me either.
I liked the huge space monster. It was an enjoyable ride, but also forgettable.

You're not honestly suggesting that the first half of R1 flows well? R1's still my favourite 'Disney' Star Wars movie, but come on....

Despite the above, I still rank R1 above Solo, and I rank both above VII and VIII.

Here are my main takeaways:
♦ There is NO REASON for this story to exist. Han is EXACTLY the same guy at the end as he is at the beginning. He says he's going to be a great pilot. WHY?!? They never bother to explain or flesh out IN ANY WAY what his motivation is. I think the film would have done better to start him younger, showing him as 10 or 12 year old to show what a horrible life he had. As it is, he simply shows up in the middle of a chase talking about getting off the planet. There's no motivation because we've been given no examples of what a horrible life's he's had. It's just a caper (and not a particularly interesting one) that attempts to show you things you already knew and understood. Think about JJ's Star Trek reboot. That film took incredible pains to set up who these characters all were and how they changed and evolved over the course of the film until they ultimately resemble the characters we've known and loved by the end. This film isn't worried about that. Anybody reviewing this movie that calls it an origin story is lying.

♦ Alden is fine as Solo, but there's nothing about him that ever makes you forget Harrison Ford. He's like a karaoke song. He sounds fine, but you never forget there's a better rendition out there.

♦ This movie's call-backs/call-forwards are insulting. While The Last Jedi seemed to be propelled by subverting fan expectation, SOLO simply thinks doing the opposite is the same thing. "I've got a really bad feeling about this" is now "I've got a really good feeling about this." "I love you" - "I know" becomes "I hate you" - "I know" That's not subverting expectations... it's find and replace and it seems to be the thing this movie's screenplay thinks is clever. It's not clever... it's lazy. When "Han shoots first" you could almost hear the Kasdan's high-fiving off screen.

♦ Lando. Sorry, I know everyone is blowing Donald Glover as Lando, but he's NOT that good. He has great moments for sure (especially early on), but I actually found him to be an anchor on the movie for the same reason everyone else is slobbering all over him... his affectations start to sound less and less like the embodiment of Lando and more and more like he's pushing too hard to do a BDW impression. BDW was effortless as Lando, Glover starts well but it starts to feel belabored by the end. It's like watching someone TRY to act cool. You can get away with it for a while, but eventually it starts to wear thin.

♦ Thandie Newton killed almost immediately. But, again, because the story has no interest in character development you don't miss her because you don't even know her.

♦ There are literally NO SURPRISES in this movie. It's path is so utterly pre-ordained that it is predictable and dull to a fault. Anybody that says this movie is exciting probably gets excited a little too easily. This movie, sorry, is actually quite boring.

♦ Darth Maul. OK, I take that last part back. There is one legitimate surprise and that's the appearance of DM near the end. But here's the thing... putting Darth Maul in this movie is stupid for a variety of reasons. Reason one, I know that Rebels is canon, but if anyone has only seen the movies (and that's going to be the majority of SOLO viewers) the last time we saw Maul he was in 2 pieces going down a tube. Bringing him back is a serious WTF moment for audiences at large. Reason two, it once again makes the Star Wars universe INCREDIBLY small. That's right... the guy that Obi-Wan sliced in half is now the "boss" of the ex-girlfriend/childhood friend of the guy that's going to randomly get hired by the guy who sliced him decades earlier. It's all very inconvenient and it's done for no other reason than for easily excitable people to point at the screen and say, "Holy shit!! Darth Maul." Reason three... including DM in this hints to some larger story at play but it's tacked on in such a way as to clearly be an afterthought. You could remove DM from this film and it wouldn't change the story in the slightest.

♦ The "Solo" name origin is one of the dumbest retcons in the history of Star Wars. I'd have more respect for this film if they'd just said he's the heir to the Solo cup company. At least the motivations would have been clear.

♦ Speaking of dumb retcons... the meeting between Chewbacca and Han is incredibly anticlimatic. In fact... they make no mention of the life-debt that has been part of the canon of Star Wars since the beginning. Han doesn't really save Chewie. Chewie actually saves Han, it's just that it was Han's idea. And while we're on the subject of "Chewie" - Han's line about "gonna have to come up with something shorter because I'm not calling you Chewbacca every time" is one of the dumbest pieces of fan-service ever committed to film. I have lots of friends that I call by a shorter version of their name. Do you know what I've never done??? Highlight and underline that I must create a shorter version because their name is just too long. Didn't Luke ALSO call him Chewie? Was there a deleted line in Star Wars where Luke says, "Shit... Chewbacca is just too long to say everytime."

♦ The Han/Chewie dynamic is fine, except since it's with an actor you don't know, it feels rushed and unearned. It feels like Chewie is cheating on Ford.

♦ I feel like the Qi'ra character and her relationship with Han actually undercuts his relationship with Leia. They really press hard that Qi'ra was really the unfulfilled love of Han's life, which seems to cut the legs out of his ultimate love with Leia. She's a fine character otherwise, but she's a romantic distraction in terms of the saga as a whole.

♦ Lando jokingly almost says "shit." I know this seems puritanical and like I'm clutching my pearls, but the idea of having a character say "shit" seems out of place in the Star Wars universe. I didn't really love Poe calling it a "big ass door" in TLJ either. It seems our of character for this world.

♦ L3... for all the talk about L3 being the newest, greatest Star Wars droid, L3 is a rather pointless character. I can't stand the SJW hatred that people currently seem to swim in, but this character is so over the top in "her" mission that it definitely comes off as a finger to SJW complainers and not a legitimate character for the story. PLUS...
[Show spoiler]now that she's joined consciousness with the Falcon, you just know Lando was ****ing the Falcon between Empire and Jedi, which is a degree of retconning I didn't need.

♦ The "New" Falcon. Adding that wedge to the front of the ship is, plain and simple, a way to sell toys. It's pointless to the story and exists more as a distraction than a legitimately cool or interesting plot point.

Was there stuff I liked? Yes, I thought the creature design was some of the best they've done in Star Wars since Return of the Jedi (especially in the first 1/3 of the movie). I also really like Powell's score, although if you asked me to identify Williams's new Han theme, I couldn't even with a gun to my head.

Ultimately this movie is so uninterestingly put together it's a miracle there's anything to watch. It's uninspired action and storytelling from start to finish. The story is so horribly told and so pointless I'm shocked the WGA granted ANYONE a "Written By" credit. I will almost assuredly NEVER see this movie again and it'll be the first Star Wars movie I never own.
So maybe a 4/5 on the poll?

Rogue One does have a few jump starts in the beginning with constantly moving from this planet, then that planet, then this planet (if that's what you're referring to) altho i dont let it bother me, and it's only for about the first 10 minutes. It flows fine to me after that.

I'd argue that it's longer than the first ten minutes myself, but either way, it doesn't overly bother me either, which is why I still cite it as my favourite of the four Disney movies, however to say that it's not there at all is disingenuous IMO.

Ok we'l say 15 minutes then. Yeah it's my fave too out of the new films. I havnt seen Solo yet, but i have heard it be said it has some darker gritter scenes similar to Rogue One, or similar photography at times. So that's hopeful to me.
