Default Rumor: Next Grand Theft Auto Could Hit By The Holidays?!

http://kotaku.com/5131392/rumor-next...y-the-holidays

Quote:
We'd think that the next proper Grand Theft Auto game, Xbox 360-exclusive expansions notwithstanding, is a long way off. Not Game Informer, though. The magazine is reportedly expecting the next entry by end of year.

Sounds crazy, doesn't it? Didn't Grand Theft Auto IV just ship? Well, if Game Informer's "Loose Talk" is correct, pegging the next full-fledged GTA for, say, November 2009, it would put it about 18 months after the ship date of GTA IV.

Since Vice City shipped almost exactly a year after Grand Theft Auto III, however, makes the prospect seem less ludicrous.

Rockstar Games still has two downloadable episodes to ship this year, including The Lost and The Damned, which hits in February and another that remains undated.

Could they do it? We're not updating our Amazon wish lists just yet, but we're also not ruling it out. Take-Two and Rockstar do like money, after all. But we're checking in with them soon to find out how feasible a fourth quarter release could be.

I could see it. vice city was really just an 80's version of III right? Used the same engine and all that. they could whip together a story and get a new game out couldn't they?

Those versions used Renderware which is awesome and required little to no development work for R*, they could concentrate on in game assets and such, but now they have their own in-house engine which is nowhere near as good as Renderware.

I'm no game wiz, but if the engine is already in place, what would hinder them with coming out with a game fairly quickly. assuming they had a story that would arrent a whole new game?

saw that DS one. might pick it up. I don't don't know about having one in the orient, but having one in china town or something would be cool. although i guess you could call that Yakuza 3 really

I would tend to disagree on the game engine. Renderware wasn't that great when compared to other engines last generation, and the version of Renderware that was slated for this generation was bagged by EA in favor of the Unreal Engine 3. Heck, even EA's own Medal of Honor: Airborne was swapped from Renderware to Unreal 3 during development. Rockstar's Rage engine, now that it's been optimized for PS3 and 360, should work fine moving forward. Midnight Club: Los Angeles seems to run and look great using the Rage engine.

Rockstar doesn't have too many successful franchises, so I wouldn't be surprised if the rumor was true. Both Activision and EA have been cranking out annual releases from their best franchises, so why not Rockstar? Building successful franchises with more regular cash flow will probably be the best defense against being taken over.

I am soooooo over the GTA series. I enjoyed GTA 3 and I enjoyed GTA: LCS on the PSP. Beyond that, I could care less about this franchise.

I thought after 4 came out Rockstar said that the next one would be a PS3 exclusive? I am going have to search for that, but I am pretty sure I remember that after the big stink of 360 getting the exclusive missions.
