The original DTS-HDMA ES Track is included on the 4K disc and it still retains the original dynamic range Of the original BD. It does have a little more power behind it than the new Atmos track. I like to check more subtitle sounds for a comparison so I used Chspter 11 (Helen Suspects). The sound seems more spacious and has better low end all around. It is especially noticeable when he backs up his car and when the plane zooms by on the DTS track. The Atmos is still good, I just prefer the DTS track.

I expected the Atmos mix to have a lower MV. A showdown between the Atmos and DTS mixes will require an SPL meter and level-matching to do a proper A-B comparison of scenes.

I'm also very interested in a bass graph, but I'll need to check the other forum for that.

I'm only finishing the first act now though. I'll see how the rest of the movie goes.

But the original mix had aggressive use of the surrounds. It should be this times more with the Atmos addition. Disney is definitely jacking with their home mixes and have been for a couple years at least.

To put into perspective how mundane the audio is on ‘The Incredibles’ is: I had to turn my volume to 25 just to experience any sort of dynamic range with the Atmos mix.

I am now watching the first episode of Game of Thrones on 4K Blu-ray, with the sound at a measly 15, and it already crushes the Atmos mix for The Incredibles.

Try the DTS-MA track instead and see if you like that one better.

Volume and dynamic range are independent of each other. What I think you're really saying is you had to turn up the volume past your usual listening level to get any satisfaction out of the Incredibles Atmos mix, which greatly perturbed you.

You are making this so hard. Honestly. Simply switch between the original 5.1 and the new mix. Adjust volume if necessary. Report back.

Yeah. Again, I’m not an expert on scientifically breaking down the audio terminology to describe all of that IN DETAIL.

But what I do know is, the mix itself—or whatever—absolutely suffers the same issues as prior Disney releases.

What is the 'ES'? Extended surround? Is that the full name of the codec or something different?

Both the DTS and Dolby Digital versions are superior to the Atmos track.

Going to be sticking with the DTS HD mix for this one on repeat viewings.

But I was under the impression that it's not only the sound levels being set lower but with DHV sound engineers taking all the sound cues and elements and re-equalizing them to a "compressed" range

Just demoed the part where they flip the RV in the third act; the Atmos mix for this is straight garbaaaaaaaage.

I switch to DTS, and all of a sudden I can hear bass kicking with each individual flip tbe RV makes.

It is the older DTS 6.1 Matrix Codec if I remember correctly. (Some were also discreet too). You used to have a single speaker in between the surrounds before two. I remember that the LOTR movies had it and and I think some of the Star Wars movies as well.

The sound sucks (what else is new). How's the picture quality though? I'm wanting to get this, but want to be sure the picture quality is worth getting it for. I know a lot of people are equally concerned about the audio presentation, but seeing as I can't use the audio components to their fullest (I'm not allowed to) it doesn't do squat for me.

It's a matrixed rear center surround 'channel' where sounds is phantomed sourced directly behind the listener

So far the only commonality I've seen in the Disney Atmos mixes is a low master volume, which I guess is an issue if you have a particular comfort level with your TV/receiver/soundbar and are afraid of blowing out your equipment if you watch one of these back-to-back with a non-Disney flick. (Or follow up Thor Ragnarok with the Thor Ragnarok main menu.)

Everything else I've heard seems specific to the mix, not a Disney policy to neuter bass and dynamics across the board. For example, Coco and Black Panther prioritize music over effects (which is frustrating in the case of the latter). Apparently A Wrinkle in Time's Atmos mix is pretty great, but the movie's a maybe-Redbox BD rental for me right now.

See, you definitely know the vernacular for that stuff better than I do. If I’m using the incorrect terminology to describe the poor Atmos audio on these Disney releases, my apologies.

But yeah, in a nutshell, the Atmos track is as useless as the prior Disney 4K releases.

That is disappointing to say the least. At least they still have the DRS HD Master Audio mix from the original Blu-ray. So at least there’s an option... but grrrrrr still disappointing.

Here's my brief--but to the point--review.

I go over the video quality, but definitely emphasize discussing the audio issues with Disney's Atmos implementation on their home releases, as it's becoming more and more increasingly frustrating.
