Yeah Prom Night's low sales really surprises me too. I figured retro horror fans would be all over this fantastic blu ray release from Synapse. At the the very least the original Prom Night is a fun little slasher thriller and a great time capsule for the late 70s.

Too bad. Synapse does some of the best work among the specialty labels. Popcorn, Prom Night, Demons, and especially Suspiria are all top form releases from them. Would love to see them take on Hello Mary Lou.

Prom Night is one of the granddaddys of slasher films - frankly I'm shocked it sold poorly. Now we'll probably never see the sequels. I liked all four films

They would be my last choice to release this masterpiece. Not like they could do anything substantive on a release to begin with. I’m going to pick up the UK’s new release coming out whenever since I don’t have confidence this’ll come out anytime soon here. Rights are tricky with this one.

I'd also say that Synapse doesn't do enough marketing/promotion. The casual horror fan doesn't know the label. If they got on the Vinegar Syndrome/Scream Factory bus, I imagine they could increase sales tenfold. But then they'd have to up their production/output, and maybe they have no interest in doing that. Maybe they're happy with things the way they are.

I'd be curious to hear whether Prom Night is still considered a poor seller today. That comment was made at least a year ago from what I can remember and Scream Factory used to make similar claims on titles only for them to turn around and claim that said titles were amongst their best sellers once they had dropped the price slightly.

I also question whether the sales expectations of part 2 can really be estimated based on the results of the original film. Take a look at these two covers...

I'd argue that the second film looks VASTLY more interesting than the original does. I'd also argue that the number of fans for the original and the sequel are likely similar, so overall sales are going to be based on blind buyers and new fans to the franchise. If that's true then the second film by far has the catchier cover, and film premise.

I just find it hard to believe that Prom Night 2 wouldn't be a better seller than the original film was.

It's in 1100 collections on this website, which seems pretty decent compared to a lot of other similar movies on this site, I wonder what they were expecting to sell.

Who said Prom Night sold poorly, exactly? Is there a quote from Don somewhere? If it's in 1100 collections just on Blu-ray.com that's just a small percentage of total sales. I consider anything above 1,000 copies sold to be excellent. Something just doesn't add up.

maybe it was a premature comment? HBK mentions the comment is at least a year old

If we had the opportunity to license PROM NIGHT II from that company, we would’ve when we bought the first film."

A Synapse release would have been ideal, but now I will hold out hope for an Arrow release.

I have the complete anthology now but am very curious to see the shorter cut. I have a feeling this is one I'll be waiting on for a while. I still need to pick up part 3 from Scream Factory and I Love that one.

For what it's worth, just took a look at my copy and watched what I think is Englund's first scene (26:45-31:40) and didn't catch any audio dropouts on either the 5.1 or 2.0.

• This will be branded as a 2-Disc “Collector’s Edition” that will come with a slipcover (guaranteed for three months after its original release date). U.S. and Canada territories (Region A).

• Extras and specs are still in progress and will be announced later in August. However, we can confirm today that we will have a new high-definition transfer of two cuts of the film! (This 117 min version that has been on Blu-ray and DVD before and a shorter, alternate version that was created after the film’s initial release in 1977.) You’ll also be happy to know that we have a brand-new interview with ‘Regan’ herself, actress Linda Blair!

8 retro titles in one month has to be a record. And they may not be done yet!
