BluFans makes some snazzy Steelbooks but they're a specialty Steelbook vendor and the runs they do are small and well sought after and difficult to get and expensive if you miss out the first time.

Thinking of skipping the steelbook this time. I started with SW, DC and Marvel on 4K but not sure I want to continue with Disney/Pixar. Just not feeling it for older catalogs and an extra $5. I like the steelbooks, but at $35 a pop; not so much. Even having second thoughts on my SPR steelbook and it was $27, lol. I think I'll get regular 4K this time.

I'll keep that in mind whenever I get a chance to watch my copy. I'll be sure to change the audio format to at least listen it on DTS Neural:X instead of Atmos. I too have been disappointed with some of the audio transfers from Disney lately.

Default Video skipped

Watched 4K version from BB steelbook in entirety last night.

It skipped while playing. Tested it and it wasn’t a one-time hiccup. Also stops then skips when FF and RW past the scene.

Scene: Mr. Incredible hugs Mirage (blonde woman) when she tells him his family survived jet crash. At the awkward moment where they release from hug Mr. I sees Mrs. I. At that point the FF/RW control panel for the UHD pops up at bottom, scene freezes, then skips ahead to Mr. and Mrs. I running out of room where he was electrically shackled, and she says “I don’t like the tone you’re striking!” (paraphrasing)

Played on a new Sony UBP-X700 which has had no issues playing blu’s, 3D, 4K. FWIW, display is Sony 65” Z9. Directly HDMI-cabled via compliant cables to 4K HDR compliant HDMI input on TV. I don’t have a second 4K player to test on.

Anyone else experience this? Recommendations? Exchange if they have replacements?

Please delete your superfluous posts and combine into one. Frankly, you owe an explanation as to the rationale for this bizarre line of questioning. Finally, this is the 4K forum. Not 1080P Blu.

Clean your disc. Even if it doesn't appear dirty.

If that doesn't work, then you might have a bad disc that needs to be returned. But you most likely have a dirty disc. Players are very sensitive to even the most minor of smudges, greasy film coating from the factory, or a spec of dirt on a UHD disc.

Interesting.

If there's only a volume problem, which I find unjustifiable, but not a deal killer, then we should make that clear. One way or another, we've got to find assurance that Disney/Marvel is stopping the Black Panther (and Ragnarok, etc) business.

Currently I can only provide information on the original Blu-ray DTSMA of The Incredibles. If someone else has not done so already by the time I purchase the UHD I will do my best to provide the typical information.

For whatever reason eac3to will convert my current MKV file of the film but the resulting multichannel flac file cannot be loaded into Audition. I always get an error. I can convert the MC flac into separate mono wave files but I have never handled MC mono files in this fashion before in Audition by running them through a 5.1 bed.

So I am not certain if the resulting file would be correct, specifically due to potential unintended additional panning that might skew the results.

Ultimately ran my MKV file through DVDfab but the resulting conversion is only 16bits. It does make me wonder if the original track is actually only 16bit instead of 24bit. I crosschecked the '24bit' MC flac with the 16bit version with the Dynamic Range Meter and the DR stats are the same with that program.

I was able to load the resulting file into Audition 2018 instead of my normal 2015.2 and here are the results.

There is a lot of clipping that has been permitted and I wonder if the original mix was truly always this way or perhaps a result from an overzealous home remix that increased the average volume with some compression, peak normalization, or just increased the gain and clipping be damned.

The debate on whether Disney is actually changing the mixes is hard to truly prove but one recent personal anecdote is Black Panther. It could have been due to the playback levels of the theater instead of the mix itself but I was able to listen to much of the film with minimal or no usage of earplugs. Which is an atypical experience for me where I usually always have my earplugs fully inserted for movie theater watching.

If it were the same art as the UHD slipcover I'd reconsider but the standard packaging is best from this point on.

Nice grouping.

Me too, chuck-chuck.

* Many people set their receivers and pre/pros to Auto (Dynamic Range Compression) for Audio...Dolby Digital, DD+, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, and even if you set it to Off it always defaults back to Auto, when you turn off your unit.
It makes no difference, I've checked. You just don't want set to On; that's for late night when you don't want to disturb the sleeping kids upstairs. It compresses the dynamics.

It's very simple; Disney are now mixing more gently for the kiddos.

The Incredibles has some powerful bass moments in their previous Blu-ray release.
And there were some scenes that you could hear overload in the bass.
Data-bass is one of the scientific audio sites for bass and measurements through viewable graphs.

I did not compare yet The Incredibles 4K vs 2K from this set and from the older set, but I will. Peter has checked already and he found the bass less prominent from this new package, I wasn't surprised being a Disney title.
But he also said that the overall audio was fine, and the 4K picture was an improvement, that's nice.

More to come, comparisons, and all that Dolby jazz...

Thank you for the charts and graphs. The more quantifiable data we can get around here, the better. (If I had a copy of Adobe Audition and the same know-how you do, I'd do a lot of these kinds of analyses myself.) How do the channels in your FLAC file map to a 5.1 speaker layout?

You are welcome.
I am glad that some are finding them useful.

I just need to properly learn the work flow for doing the bass graphs as well; SpecLab is a bit outside my wheelhouse and normal usage for the basic audio editing that I typically do.

Usually with either DTS(MA) or Dolby(THD) tracks, while using eac3to, for 5.1 channel assignments it is as follows:

1=L
2=R
3=C
4=LFE
5=SurroundLeft
6=SurroundRight

With 7.1, typically the channel assignments are this way:

1=L
2=R
3=C
4=LFE
5=RearSurroundLeft
6=RearSurroundRight
7=SurroundLeft
8=SurroundRight

But why now though? They didn't do it on the previous Blu-ray format with similar releases. In fact, there were no complaints about audio on the last Incredibles release. I'm calling hogwash on that statement. That just doesn't make sense. Something may well be up with their current audio issues, but that up there ain't it.

Why now? Becuz things change, perhaps different people with different mindsets in charge of the audio dept. Maybe there've been years of complaints from Mom and Pop that they have keep turning it up to hear dialogue but keep turning it down whenever there's a louder sequence, and given that Disney's content really is more kiddie-oriented than that of other studios it's not so surprising that every person who's bought one of their Blus in the last 10 years might not be a rabid home theater junkie. Interested enough in getting the best version for their new HDTV, sure, but that's as far as it goes for a LOT of people.

But as it is right now, the 4k UHD market is a niche one. It may grow beyond that, but as we type the format is being marketed towards that niche which does want quality audio along with quality picture. Something is obviously up with their current audio mixes (I won't deny that), but the excuse of mixing it for the kiddies just doesn't pan out much. If that were the reason they wouldn't bother with an Atmos mix to begin with. It really defeats the purpose.
