I have no interest in anything that glorifies gangsters, though I can stand something about the Gangsters getting their ass beat down. These tough guys that would get mauled if the police ever played by the same rules don't impress me.

With the end of Boston Legal I'm officially done with preachy, I got no interest in people with B.A.'s telling people with B.S.'s how stupid they are. As a former watcher of Law and Order, I've since dropped all of them for this exact reason. Funny commentary is OK if it's broad spectrum (I'll watch Leno, but I haven't watched 60 minutes total of Letterman my entire life).

No interest in slapstick comedy, bores me.

I'm trying to avoid 'dark serialized' shows like CSI, not because they're bad but because I want to come out of a show at least as happy as I was going in. So I'm weening myself off stuff like CSI, sticking with stuff like NCIS or the Mentalist.

I think I'm the only minority youth raised in an urban environment that disliked Scarface. Strongly.

Anytime I see a gangster in a movie, be it The Departed or Batman, my entire thought process is how pathetic this bozo is and how badly he would get his ass beat by an unrestricted agent of the law. Hell, TDK did it in reverse, a truly good and evil person showing us how petty and pathetic a pack of gangsters really is against an unrestrained foe. I could never take a movie about the Mafia seriously knowing that it is only the protections of society that keep them from getting beat down like a bunch of children. I respect the characters on screen in Saving Private Ryan, I respect the characters on screen in Black Hawk Down, I laugh at the characters on screen in a ganster movie.

Hell I stay away from most shit that is wide release, other than big name blockbusters that are actually going to be good (TDK, Iron Man, Wall*E..ETC) and sequels of series that I love (Bond, Rambo, Rocky..ETC)

And when it comes to TV, I have no idea what shows come on...I only watch: Discovery, N Geo, History, and ESPN. lol

I agree. I also tend to stay away from Reality television. It's scripted and edited just like any other show.

My one exception was: Who wants to be a superhero.
I found it funny, and I like Stan Lee (who hosts it). Maybe it is because the first time that I turned it on; I saw a bozo in a costume get dragged around a backyard by some police dogs.

I thought Brokeback Mountain was very good. extremely tragic and sad though

Are there exceptions (a movie or TV show that was good despite you not liking the genre)???

My personal example: I don't like Westerns. I have never really liked Westerns. For the most part, they have all seemed very cookie-cutter to me.
My exceptions are
the movie Unforgiven and the
TV show -The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (Although, this may be because I like Bruce Campbell).

What about anyone else. Do you dislike Western? Sci-fi? Action? Drama? Romance? Anime? Comedy? Buddy Flicks? Sports Movies?

(If I get enough responses, I'll put up a poll in another day or two.)
It seems recently I haven't been a big fan of comedies. It seems like they're all currently driven by some big name and are all pretty much the same crap. Like Adam Sandler comedies where he's alway pretty much an immature loser. Or Jim Carrey where he's basically a cartoon character all the time.

It seems weird because I can think about a movie like Airplane and laugh about some line ("Do you like gladiator movies?"). The biggest star in that was Leslie Nielsen and I'm not sure how big of a star he ever really was.

And I think most anime is crap. Granted, I guess I haven't really seen much but what I have seen has made me want to steer clear of the rest. Most I've seen look cheaply animated, like they'll be a crowd scene but only the main people are moving at all. Or motion is simulated by shaking the main character image and flashing diagonal lines across the image. And then there's all the stereotype characters, the effiminate men and the obnoxiously squeally voiced, prone to screaming for no reason females.

I stay away from anything where a cast member says the word "poop" or "poo" in the trailer.

agreed. recent comedies are pretty cookie cutter.

Also, a lot of the anime that is shown on TV does have the "stereotype characters, the effiminate men and the obnoxiously squeally voiced, prone to screaming for no reason females." and "motion simulated by shaking the main character image and flashing diagonal lines across the image." which is one of the reasons that I stay clear of most Anime.

My top recommendation of Anime for someone who has had this kind of experience with Anime and is looking for a good serious animated movie is Samurai X:Trust and Betrayal. The animation is closer to a Western style than most anime, and will ease you in. (--Not recommended for children due to Violence/Adult situations)

Other good ones for those with not much experience in the genre are Spirited Away (was distributed by Disney in the U.S., was the first anime film to win an Academy Award, and Spirited Away overtook Titanic to become the highest-grossing film in Japanese history.),
and Princess Mononoke (written by Miyazaki-who also wrote Spirited away).

I also liked Akira, but I had trouble watching it until I saw some of the others I listed and got a little more accepting of the genre.

That sounds like an informed opinion.

With you completely on the comedy thing. Of all the comedies that come out in a given year it seems that 95% are either re-treads of something that was funny in the past, or dwells on toilet humor. There are a couple of great ones out there each year but many times it seems like they get dwarfed in box office by movies that apply the equation crass = funny. I am totally a snob when it comes to comedy though because if I wanted to laugh at poop, I've got my own toilet and don't need Blu-Ray or a ticket.

Anything thats is (mostly) sov or shot on video direct movies (horror films) which are ruining the catagorie, producing awful pictures and is never what the box cover suggests and the movies with zombies or rabid people are the prime example.

Televison, mostly i just have on edu-tainment type programs but will watch the chiller channel or amc or some animation but tend to stay away from the programming junk thats on and certainly the mainstream affiliate stations i try to avoid as well which does limit programs abit.

I have another to add here: movies shot with camcorders like Blair Witch or Cloverfield. I don't like it when all a movie does is give me motion sickness and the cameraman can't stop screaming and acting like an idiot.

I agree with Reality shows. Hate them. Also not a fan of sit-coms at least the ones nowadays.
Not a big fan of movie westerns or alot of the current comedies, though I do like British humour.
