It may be too late for gift cards. When Sharper Image went into bankruptcy, the judge wouldn't allow them to honor the cards, which were considered unsecured debt.

Best Buy is struggling as well, they are taking proactive steps as we speak.

You must be crazy! EVERY retailer is having problems. I know BB is having their share also. They are not going to go out of business, because they had a few good years before 2008, but I am sure they are tightening things up. In a generation or so, online shopping may be the only way to shop.

OK I'll give you that... Best Buy may have their problems, but their taking the proper steps to fix the business. Circuit City has been under bad management for a long time now, so this not a big surprise. I do agree, online shopping is probably gonna be the wave of the future.

The point is Best Buy is staying in business and Circuit city is not.

People, unfortunately, refuse to believe this. It's the fundamental law of economics.... no competition = no downward pressure on prices.

As soon as the judge makes his final decision, which hasn't happened yet.

I came into work this morning with hope, but was let down right away. At least I have a job for a few months while I start looking for a new one. Too bad there are no electronics stores around me besides Best Buy (and they're not hiring).

I give it a few more months before Best Buy is in the same boat which I will say good riddance as well. All the best buys near me have nothing but incompetent kids who don't know what their talking about.

Internet stores are KING!!

Man, F WORST Buy. I've never had a good sales experience there, ever. From the time they called me a scammer for printing out a coupon to the time their website told me to go pick up my order while their store told me it wasn't there to the several times associates said they would assist me and then just disappeared, it's the worst store in the world.

I used to be in management at Best Buy and I can tell you they haven't considered CC to be serious competition for the past 4-5 years.

I remember opening a Best Buy around 5 years ago and the big shots from corporate came out and during meetings they told us that their top 3 competitors were in order 1. walmart 2. amazon 3. ebay

Not necessarily. It's not liked BB sells food or electricity. Everything sold in that store is a "want" not a "need." If they raise prices too high, we, as consumers, can simply refuse to shop there. I guarentee that if consumers refuse to pay the high prices, the prices will fall pretty quick.

And to say that BB is free from competition is ridiculous to begin with. There are plenty of other stores out there such as Frys, Ultimate Electronics, and other regional electronics outlets. Not to mention the online stores like Amazon, E-bay, 6th Ave, etc.

Having ZERO competition natiowide and Electronics Sales majority by Best Buy is bad for the long term for consumers like you and me.

So enjoy your 90-days of half-ass liquidation deals and possibly a lifetime of pricing uplifts due to no competition.

No competition? How?

What about Wal-Mart, Target, Frys, Amazon, Buy, Overstock, etc.

Sure Wal-mart isn't focused on electronics but if BB starts getting cocky and starts charging $40 per blu-ray then what do you think Wal-Mart will do?

Plus you're assuming that no new electronics retailer will ever rise up. All of those retailers started from humble beginnings you know.

Competition also means that some business will fail, not be locked in an eternal deathmatch.

Austina, I dont know if its different now, but I was in the first round of layoff's from circuit a couple months ago, and I am getting my severance check next week. .075 cents per hour worked during liquidation for part time, full time gets $1, and supervisors get $1.25. Dont seem like much, which it's not. But luckily I was working 50 hours every week during it for about 9-10 weeks, so it will be an ok, but tiny check.
