The X700 is over a year Newer than the other 2 Sony players, and so seems more reliable than the X800 which some users report as freeze prone.

The X700 has been on sale a couple of times, there are price reports here in this thread if you go back and look. The X700 seems to be the best value, and I think Sony will be supporting this one for a longer time.

$200 is nice, but I think I will probably wait until Black Friday and snag this guy for $150 or $100.

IFA 2018 is in Sept.

Rumours indicate new Z9D. Maybe called Z9F.
Some talk going around also new Sony x800 disc player.

If announced. Then likely Sony x700 price point then would be great too. As peoples jump to the new x800

You talking 1080p, HDR10, 3D right.

Surely DV was not compared!

audio? (format support) & build quality? (perceptually :: seemingly a more comprehensive design?)

Thanks for the input. I'll try for that model. Just wish it was better built. Also since I don't own a 4K TV yet, how will the 4K movies look on a non 4K TV? Better than 1080p or the same?

I've yet to see a professional review saying that the build QUALITY is inferior to the 800 in any way.

There have been some comments regarding the X800 LOOKING better/"more serious" in most home theater set ups.

But every article I've read, as well as some customer testimonies, and a blog or two where they've opened up the unit itself say that the actual quality of the build is just as good as the X800.

For those who care about having all of the audio formats possible, it's a better buy, sure, but, I've yet to see anything evidence based that actually points to a lesser build quality period. Let alone any sort of difference that makes the build of the 700 a performance or reliability a concern.

Anyone have some links that have an actual breakdown or stats to confirm the X700 build is "worse"?

The build quality is much better on the 800 and on the 700. The 700 is more plasticy than the 800 and the 800 is more sturdy built. I did just place my order for the 700. My store was out and got 2 day free shipping, should be here Sat.

One should only get a UBP-X700 if they want Dolby Vision HDR. However the two advantages of the UBP-X800 is the ability to play DVD-Audio discs and better build quality. This well be a non issue soon, since its my understanding that the 2017 UBP-X800 is out of production and once inventory is depleted people well go with the 2018 Sony UBP-X700 instead.

Look for ebay deals. They had a father's day promotion this week for 20% off pretty much everything. Was able to grab this player for about $150.

The 800 is $300 right now, with NO Dolby Vision.
The 700 is $200 right now (next Black Friday probably $100), WITH Dolby Vision.

The 700 might look very cheap and plastic but The Matrix in 4K on a giant screen will give you what the Oppo 205 gives you. ...And on a smaller screen Dolby Vision full glory and golden leaves.

I just learned that the X700 had been added as a VUDU UHD client. So, I decided to try it out.

The movie I rented did show Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, but I could not get it to output the Atmos sound. The DV did come thru very nicely and the TV did go into DV mode, but the sound was just Dolby Digital.

Has anyone been able to get Vudu with Atmos sound? Thanks.

Mine was delivered yesterday afternoon. Haven't had time to open it and hook it up. Only heard good things about this player that's why I went with it. Also this player is on sale for $179. $20 cheaper when I got it. I did a chat with BB and had him give me the current sale price of $179.99 I hope I'm happy with my choice here...

This just info, bouht my player on Amazon.com, but can confirm it works with higher current input as well, not just the 120v stated on the power unit.
We have 240v here in Denmark, but took a chance, plugged it in-via adapter, and have seen 2 films now, withoit problems.

To get Atmos on VUDU etc. you have to turn off Digital Music Enhancer.

Setup-> Audio Settings -> Digital Music Enhancer Off.

From reading forums there is talk that Sony has stop new production of the x800's. That could explain the price drops of the x800. I smell something new coming. A metal case would be cool.

Bob. Actually Sony x800 is $229 now

it's not inferior (audio quality); it's just less support for audio formats (the BDP-X800 simply is more comprehensive as a CD player in that sense of things)

further :: to clarify, the build quality of the two players is most likely identical, although the earlier X800 'seems more substance' resulting in an perception of 'better build quality'; etc.

further :: features (basically/simplistically) differences are (X700 - Dolby Vision - lower price) - (X800 - more comprehensive support of audio formats - perception of better build quality - higher price - perception of being a more comprehensive 'universal' player)

Why does my TV display EVERY disc as DV when I have DV output set to on with this player? Is there any problem with leaving it on, or do you need to manually turn DV on when playing only DV discs? ET said it was DV when I had this player set to DV on.

UPDATE: After some researching, I guess this is just an issue with the DV implementation on the X700. I’ll deal with it. Much better than dealing with raised black levels.

Oh, even better then, for non-Dolby Vision TV owners and for front projector owners.

Question: Of all the TVs out there, from the year 2018, what is the total percentage of the ones that sport Dolby Vision? ...And the ones that sport 3D?
