Blu-ray players for the car

I have heard of Alpine developing an HD-DVD player for the car. I was wondering if anyone had heard of a company developing a bluray player for a car. I have a PS3, so I have built up a small bluray collection, but cannot play them on my dvd player in my car, so I think that kind of sucks for long road trips I have been taking this summer. Any knowledge would be useful.

There really isn't a point since you won't see the benefits of 720p let alone 1080 on a 7-10" screen.

Plus you can probably buy every title you'd like ot play in the car for the next 10 years on DVD for what it'd cost

I know there won't be a benefit, I just want to be able to play my blurays in the car without having to double up on movies. I could always plug my PS3 into the S-video jacks, but I dont want to drive around with that thing in my car.

Well just that (being able to use the BDs in the car) would be a benefit and there would definitely be a market for that. For my current car (Honda Pilot) we had the option of navigation system or video system for the rear. It was about 50/50 in our minds about which to order. For our next car (several years from now), if we are presented with the same option (i.e., you choose only one of the two) it will probably be 50/50 again as long as the video player is BD capable. However, it the option would still be a standard DVD player (instead of Blu-ray), it would be a "no brainer" for us - we'd go with the navigation system as almost all our newer discs would be BDs by then.

I expect that several years down the road car based BD players would be almost as inexpensive as standard DVD players.

The Alpine HD DVD player displayed at CES was a "concept demonstration". In like fashion, Kia showed a BD-equipped concept car a few months ago.

You're all on the wrong path on this one. The iPod video capabilities will eventually take over this market. Most vehicle manufacturers from this point forward are including iPod ports in most make/models. This will be built into the vehicle at production time...screen and all. Nobody really cares about HD in vehicles on at most a 10-12 inch screen (especially with glare, etc...). Nor do people want to drag disks in & out their homes. Just throw your 20 favs on your little media server and your good to go. And your buddy who jumps in the car can play his movies too because he'll also have a pod in his pocket.

You need to start thinking like a 13 year old. Because their view of the world is what drives the market 5 years from now when they reach adulthood. 13 y/o's don't give a crap about BD. But they LOVE their iPods.

Yeah Ipod video to lcd screen in a car is where its at. I am not sure if software is available for this yet.. but maybe you could rip the bluray to an xvid/divx file and play that off the screen? You could fit many of those on a DVDr and DLDVDr. You can afford to rip to a very small resolution as well given the car screen size.

Sony has mentioned plans to use some of the extra capacity of the Blu-ray disc to supply PSP and iPOD versions of the movie. Also, Managed Copy would allow the same capability (albeit not quite as high quality) from any disc.

The next-gen PSP has a video output, so that might be a much nicer option than carting around a PS/3. Not to mention it is also a portable game device. And, can access your PS/3 remotely.

I thought panasonic was talking about releasing a blu-ray player for cars. Not sure if it was confirmed.

If they are making BD players for cars, might as well include a portable 1080p projector and a surround sound to boot. Drive anywhere for a Drive-in movie experience!

Just so I'm not totally hijacking the thread...Ipod in cars is probably a the better move.

On the other hand, can HD truly overcome SD DVD if it can't take over vehicle entertainment like DVD has? IMO, the PS3 will help with that. Gaming in vehicles has always been one of the catalysts to fueling disc entertainment in vehicles. Gaming in a vehicle is thinking like a child (and adult), and since the PS3 plays Blu-ray...

Of course that wouldn't be the reason. The reason would be so that folks could use their Blu-ray discs to play in the car and not have to buy separate standard DVDs. The actual display "experience" wouldn't be significantly better than the DVD experience because of the display screen size.
