Even if someone would argue the picture is better on the UK release, it's certainly not by a wide margin by any means id of thought, so in that respect, the U.S release is the better option. You are still getting a very satisfactory image, original audio, and a long documentary (The Bandit) So the U.S release wins it for me.
I just ended up keeping both. I’ll need to rip the discs if I want to use the older master with the mono, but I really prefer the relatively unmolested UK transfer and I also think the US transfer looks vertically squished. I’m actually completely ignorant to the audio changes, so I’m not sure I’d even notice the benefits of the mono track!
