Is there any chance they release the Phantom with this style of design to match as a stand alone or probably not? I have the previous release but my OCD gets the best of me sometimes.

Don’t see why not.

He's tried...it's one of the handful of 3-D films owned by Wade Williams.

Indeed, I've been trying for many years and have given up.

Not sure how it'll work in this case but for the German (Koch) release of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series, there were non-dubbed seasons for which only German subs were provided.

Jesus, I made it to the bottom of the first page, got to the "Public domain is evil" rant and checked out. The guy seems like a world class ass-hat.

I'm hoping the packaging is similar to the DVD set with individual cases and not some flimsy, fold-out digipack.

I'd like to know how this nutbag ended up with the "copyright" to so many vintage sci-fi films. I'm betting some serious shenanigans and eye-wool were pulled.

No reason it won’t be like the DVD set.

At one point I would've EASILY paid $15-20 for EACH of these movies, just to own them on Blu. Lucky we can own sets of up to 7 movies for only $20... or an entire set for $150 (which is reasonable) the 'double-ups' don't phase me, for the sake of being able to own the other movies in the set. It's not like you're paying extra, or ‘double dipping’ to own them all over again... think of them as extras, it's not like they're taking up extra shelf space.
The DVD/Blu-ray era has spoiled everyone. I don't think people realize just how expensive it used to be to own films.

I've posted this before, but way back in 1959, Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine used to offer a 50-foot 8mm silent version of The Phantom of the Opera (and I suspect a pretty poor quality print) for $4.95 (or for $5.95 in 16mm). That works out to about 4 minutes of footage, depending upon the projection speed. That $4.95 in 1959 is $43 today and that $5.95 for the 16mm version is $51 in today's dollars. All for what amounts to a poor quality silent trailer and things you could see on YouTube and elsewhere today for free.

IIRC, back in the 1960s, decades old used 16mm prints of b-movies used to cost around $200 from places like Peerless-Willoughbys. Using 1965 as the baseline, that's $1582 per movie in today's dollars.

Not to mention how much laserdisc and early VHS movies used to cost. A $35 laserdisc in 1980 is $106 in today's dollars.

Hell, for the equivalent price of two issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland one could buy a budget Blu-ray movie today. That's really unbelievable.

Yes, we've gotten very spoiled (including myself). There are times when I hesitate to spend even $10 on a BD.

Which ones, Robert? And were these films mastered from those nitrate camera negs?

I know the Library of Congress was working about two years ago on preserving Abbott & Costello meets Frankenstein, but I don't know about other Universal titles and whether U got access to the result of that preservation.

Original 35mm nitrate camera negative survives on most of the features post-1933. On earlier horror titles, they may not have the OCN, but they have first generation 35mm lavender low contrast positive masters, made directly from the camera negatives in the 1930s.

All of this nitrate material was sourced over the past several years for the new 4K restorations.

I don't know his source, but Robert Harris says:
  • Dracula: Derived from a nitrate lavender print.
  • Frankenstein - majority harvested from a 1939 nitrate lavender of the re-cut short version of the film. The original negative, of which several reels no longer exist, was in too poor a condition to be the centerpiece of the restoration, with missing shots filled in from other elements.
  • The Mummy - the original negative no longer exists. A fine grain was the basis of the scan, with various replacement sections, as necessary, from other elements.
  • The Bride of Frankenstein - derived from a nitrate composite lavender.
  • The Wolfman - derived from a dupe picture negative, itself taken from a nitrate fine grain
  • Phantom of the Opera (1943) - derived from the original camera negatives, albeit to an interpositive. The problem is that the IP is flawed, uncorrected.
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon - derived from the OCN .

Bah, all these old-ass movies. When is Universal going to pony up and release these classics on Blu-ray?

I just got the DVD set ...
