Default Help choosing a new Subwoofer

Hi all, I need your help choosing my new subwoofer,I've narrowed down my choices to 2, Velodyne DLS-5000R (600 watts RMS, 1000 peak) or Klipsch RW-12D (350 watts RMS, 825 peak) I cant figure out how to post links to these subs. but both of these are the same price $799,I would think the obvious choice would be the Velodyne but I wanted some opinions before i choose. Thanks

I would have to say velodyne hands down for me. There is just something about a company that dedicates all of their resources to one technology, not trying to divide it up to multiple things such as loudspeakers, pc speakers, etc.

You may also want to consider the 2 Epik Subs:

between the 2, I'd go with the Velodyne. I was looking at the RW-10d and DLS-4000R and hands down the Velodyne was a better sub (even more so than the RW-12d). I can only assume the DLS-5000R would be that much better. you don't hear a great deal of talk about Velodyne here, but they make a great product.

to be more exact:
The Velodyne provided tighter bass and was much more musical (IMO of course) than the Klipsch. I haven't hit anything that stretches the 4000R and the quick EQ settings are nice and easy with a universal remote.

That should be related to the required power for the driver, box size, and circuitry design. Other manufacturer's Subs may have more efficient drivers that may not need as much power. In fact with those drivers more power could result in blowing the driver.

One of the cool things about the DLS line is that it includes power management to ensure over driving doesn't occur. Not saying it won't, of course..

I'm curious with your budget, why have you narrowed the choices down to these 2? Have you considered SVS, HSU, eD or Epik? All offer subs in your price range or less that could at the very least hang with the 2 you're trying to choose between.

I have all klipsch speakers in my HT so i was looking for a klipsch sub to match them, then a buddy of mine was telling me to look at velodyne because he has one and swears you get more boom for your buck, I really haven't heard too much about the brands you meantioned, nothing against them but there aren't alot of HT stores where i live to experience a range of different subs from different companies, pretty much just the usual suspects.

These brands are normally bought directly from the maker from their websites; most are not in stores, but they all specialize in subwoofers. Because they are purchased directly from the maker, they generally do not have as much mark-up.

Exactly. They're all internet direct companies. Since you can't buy them in stores, you save ALOT of money, because there's no middle man. All the companies I listed have VERY long threads dedicated to their various models in the subwoofer forums at avsforum.com. They all have top-notch reputations in regards to product quality, bang for your buck, and customer service. I strongly urge you to at least look into them before making your final decision.

Also, it's not important for your subwoofer to match the rest of your setup, unless you just want it to for aesthetic purposes.

Here are their websites if you want to take a look.

SVS
http://www.svsound.com/index.cfm

HSU
http://www.hsuresearch.com/

Epik
http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/Products.html

eD
http://www.edesignaudio.com/index.php?cPath=2_41

I think there's a pretty good wait right now on most of Epik's subs. You may want to double check that, but the rest of them are all available right now, if I'm not mistaken.

There's nothing wrong with choosing a traditional (non internet direct) company even at a 'premium' either. We all have our different requirements...

Nothing wrong with it all. I only intended to suggest that the OP might save a few $$$ or be able to get a better sub than he would have otherwise. In the end it's his choice and all that matters is he gets a sub he's happy with. But now he knows there are other options out there to consider.

VERY nice looking HT setup by the way.

I like the MFW-15 and have one myself, but do you still recommend them with the "issues" they've been having lately? That was the only reason I didn't throw them out there.

Good idea posting the Craigsub link too.
