There aren't too many people who are aware that HDR and Dolby Vision are far from being cooked. We only have a minuscule taste.
But it's nice from Sony to offer a universal player like the X800 for only $150 when on sale.

Just wait five more years or so.
In the interim some Dolby Vision players are only $99 or so, coming up this next Black Friday. They are the lowest of the lowest end...Sony, LG.

But, Panasonic and Pioneer and Cambridge ... and Sony too should come up eventually with some ES limos.
* Oppo is dead, they had a good run, rest in peace. They'll be hard to beat for few more months...the 203, and the 205 for probably more than few more months.

hey folks I been having an issue that happen when I got this player back in april between turning off tv aka mini genie direct tv remote control when on cbl/sat on my tx nr575 receiver

basically for some odd reason whenever I turn off direct tv mini genie direct tv remote control sometimes I get blue screen for a few seconds then it switches to bd/dvd on receiver turns it on other times it automatically switches as soon as I turn off tv direct tv remote control

now in past I found a way to maintain keep cbl/sat to stay on extended period of time without having to automatically switch over to bd/dvd turn on bluray player I hate it when happens

long story short this past thurs night I turn on tv direct tv genie thing wanted system update I kindof turn it off turn it back on apparently it started to update and got finshed

umm since that night past 3 days actually I cannot get the trick to work anymore I even try to turn both remotes off same time then turn receiver on still problems that I done so many times when this happens turn off direct tv genie its not staying on cbl/sat extended period of time and just want to switch back to bd/dvd turn on bluray driving me nuts

i'm trying my hardest to figure out how to do it like I said been 3 days receiver just want to switch over bd/dvd and turn on bluray player instead staying on cbl/sat

how can I maintain it to stay on cbl/sat on receiver when I turn off direct tv mini genie with direct tv remote and no switching to bd/dvd turning on bluray player on receiver?

in the system settings bluray player I got hdmi audio output is on auto

also in hdmi settings <-you can control this unit via an hdmi1 connected tv

control for hdmi on link to tv-off valid

it said allow mutal operations between this unit and device connected to this unit using an hdmi cable

now it seems if I turn off control for hdmi the link to tv will say invalid and when turn off direct tv with remote control genie it stays on cbl/sat doesn't fire up to bd/dvd turn on bluray

i'm not sure if its a good thing or bad thing if I turn off control for hdmi<-stay on cab/sat

meaning what kindof impact will it have as compare to leaving it on<-switching over to bd dvd as soon as I turn off direct tv mini genie thing with direct tv remote and not staying on cbl/sat

can somebody please help me on this issue much appreciated

A: Sony doesn’t have any plan to update Dolby Vision for UBP-X800 and UBP-X1000ES. Update is technically impossible from hardware standpoint. We looked at all options to update these two models, but were unsuccessful due to hardware limitations.
I'm still frustrated by Sony's approach to DV support.

You read that Sony has developed different profiles for DV on different devices.

Some devices can do all the processing and lite profiles outsource processing.

But Sony only wants to allow this approach with Sony TVs (?), I'm not entirely sure.

I can't help but think that if Sony wanted to enable lite DV profile on X800, it could.

I'm sure my LG C6 OLED would be more than capable of doing the rest, but Sony would rather have us buy new players instead.

Actually Sony's profile is even harder for the X800 as the player itself has to make a lot of the decoding process compared to standard DV....

X800 doesn't have the hardware to do this...

My current TV doesn't support Dolby Vision, so I don't care right now. In a few years, DV players will be cheap anyway...

Regarding DV: am I disappointed that the 800 will not get DV? Yes. My thought was it would get updated. It was never promised but it seemed that it would likely come. In the end, I took a chance and it didn't pan out.

As I mentioned other times, DV was not present on many discs. I figured that if it would become more common than I would get another player. I wasn't too happy with that decision bc I don't like to make purchases knowing for certain that available or announced tech is not supported by it. I guess my rationale was the LG player was not looking good to me and the oppo was too expensive.

The only comfort I have is that I will eventually need a second 4k player and the 700 is 'only' about $150. Then, DV will me mine haha.

I don't use this player very often but last time I had the blinking issue on the player main menu, but once you play a disc it stops. and yes I do have premium hdmi 18gbps 60hz cable running through it. and it froze once without a disc, I had to completely unplug from the power source. it haven't frozen up yet with a disc in but I'm sure it will soon.

Is there a new one?

My player crashes even when not playing a film. Turned it on maybe a couple of nights ago, Sony splash screen appeared, then a bright flash of red green and blue “white noise” appeared on screen, then a black screen, then my TV saying no signal (but the player light was still on). Had to turn the thing off, then back on again, and the main menu did actually appear that time. This is a pretty common thing now, the player just seems very unstable generally, not just playing discs.

"Improved intense color quality on HDR content playback".

Did anyone do the update and noticed anything?

I've been reading on here how some people are having issues with their x800. I have had mine for a month month now and no issues. It plays everything I throw at it and no issues. Also its been a flawless steaming machine. Someone mentioned they were having trouble playing Dunkirk. Just watched it yesterday and again no issues.

How does the player work in terms of HDMI connection to the display? Is there "talk back" to the player from the display its connected to? Could the display in theory "crash" the player or is it just a one way path for data to flow as an output?

There is a ‘handshake’ protocol between the HDMI ports both ways, incl the AVR if one is in the chain. The cable can also be a culprit. For HDR10 it’s best to use ‘Premium Certified’ 18gbs cables for the entire video segment of the chain.

Same here, I've played over 50 4k UHD's and several blu-rays on it and my player has been flawless. I purchased it last year when it first came out. I guess we are the lucky ones...

Default It looks like the Sony automated firmware update servers are now working correctly

Update: After installing the latest 6-20-2018 M36R0238 firmware update, this problem is no longer occurring on two different Sony UBP-X800's. Now when I try the Sony automated firmware update server, for some reason it connects every time and says the proper message of Already Updated. Hopefully this problem with connecting with the Sony server well never occur again, all I can say is for now it is working fine and appears to be resolved.

Here is the link to the detailed problem I reported back in January of 2018.

There is a known problem with the automated firmware update process on the Sony UBP-X800 that hopefully one day will be fixed with a firmware update (click link for details).
