Right, got it home and set it up.
The first thing I threw into it after updating it, wasn't a UHD disc. I wanted to see: (a) Could it pass through Dolby Vision demos from a portable HD drive? Yes, it could. Dispelling this nonsense from certain people on AVSForums, that the player isn't actually outputting a DV signal, but tricking our displays. Anything else on the HD, it played in its proper format, (SDR stayed as SDR), refusing to convert any of it, (which is good), even the various HDR demos that I threw at it. (b) What exactly did the forced DV do to blu-rays? I've read various things, and while I've only looked at a couple of titles, I was not appalled. I intend to a lot more testing , but it reminded me of a less crap version of various sets faux HDR modes. No grey bars encountered. Sony engineers saying that the player will simply pass through all SDR content as exactly that, are talking rubbish. The below images are from the Japanese release of Aeon Flux, and the standard release of Ride Along 2. DV mode was activated while taking this images. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pure voodoo magic. Last edited by Sky_Captain; 06-22-2018 at 08:01 PM. |

Yep. Surely Pretty Sharp and Chrisp Images from the x700.
Captain. What TV were those displayed on? Thinking you might have multiple TV's in your home. I know what Sony x700 looks like on a LG E6 OLED. Would love to see Photo's side-by-side LG OLED to Sony Z9D. I been changing my home TV selections. Thinking for Sony Z9"F" or 940"F", 930"F"(I have room for a 55 inch, maybe 65 inch LED TV). Excited for September's IFA 2018 Trade Show. Last edited by E6AtmosVuduDV; 06-22-2018 at 07:01 PM. Reason: Finishing |

I just got this player and an oled LGB7. Everything looks great but I feel like the audio is off ever so slightly. I run an hdmi from the audio/video slot to the receiver and then into my tv. Could something be getting lost in there? I’ve tried bitstream and pcm on the player but neither makes a difference. Sometimes the audio is spot on and sometimes it seems off. I think it might be me not being used to this size of a tv and I can see lips moving more noticeably. Anyone else have an audio problem with this player? Would using an ARC, which my tv has, help? I’m not too knowledgeable about it.

Given I have to switch on Dolby Vision manually (and remember to turn off after watching a DV disc) is there a good way to find out if a 4K disc is DV or HDR-10... Obviously it would be better if it auto-detected fully but until (if) that happens at least I will know to turn it off for BDs and DVDs but to me it seems many 4K discs just say HDR (not which type!) and I don't want tro turn on DV for a non-DV encoded 4K disc (with it's potential negative side effects).
I also notice odd info from even this site with (eg) Black Panther (US release) being DV but Black Panther (UK release) lablelled as HDR but not HDR-10 or DV... my guess would be if one release worldwide is DV thay all will (but you never know!) - any advice? |

Given that I don't have the player going to an amp, I'm just leaving it on. The tests I've done today, have shown that the real HD-10 and faux DV signals are virtually indistinguishable from each other. I thought that DNR was being introduced in the chain, but that's so far unfounded.

That's such a slipshod implementation of DV that I'm postponing my purchase of an X700. It's like they took the engineering test version of the software and decided to release it as a real product, and I won't reward the insult.

For me it is not such a big deal as I had an X-700 anyway (not knowing about the DV upgrade promise) so it is still an improvement - I just wish discs were maked up with whether they were DV or HDR-10 for full clarity, until (hopefully) Sony do sort it out. |

Just popped in 4K UHD Disc Fury with Brad Pitt.
With x700 DV switched on... Details are considerably more defined and chrisp. DV badge lights up on my E6 OLED. With x700 DV switched off... Details are not as well defined and not as chrisp. HDR badge lights up on my E6 OLED. I'll try to post screen photo captures later comparing the two. |

If you then turn DV off on the X-700 the E6 will show the correct SDR indication with the correct colour balance. |

But what's interesting is what the X700 does for HDR only (no DV) displays. My 65" Sony 850E has only the X1 processor, not the X1 extreme, so it didn't get the DV update. On UHD BDs, whether DV or HDR, the X700 always reports HDR output (my 850E doesn't report the HDR input, only the resolution) and the colors & brightness are the best I've seen on the 850E. And last night I played the Netflix disc by mail BD rental of Pacific Rim Uprising with DV and 4k upconversion set to ON in the X700. The picture was amazing, almost UHD quality, with clear and distinctive HDR highlights. Sony touts SDR-HDR conversion as a feature of the player, and it sure was on display with PR Uprising BD. The standard BD of PR Uprising has an Atmos track, and the X700 bitstreams that to my Onkyo 656 AVR perfectly. I'm sure as heck not going to stop buying UHDs as that's my preferred format. I have Pacific Rim UHD and enjoy it, but with mixed reviews of Uprising I thought I'd go with a rental BD first. Uprising is also a fun film, I'll pick up the UHD when it's at a happy price.
