I've only just read it but it's framed using the exact words I've used upthread: hope, optimism, confidence. We're seeing a young side play with belief, belief in themselves, belief in their manager, belief that they can do some damage in this tournament. And by Christ this is what we've been waiting for as England fans, to have a team not riven by club rivalries, to have a team not bored out of their gourds at some isolated camp, to have a team that feels free to express itself on and off the pitch rather than being frightened to death every time they pull on an England shirt (just look at Michael Carrick's comments recently). I genuinely do believe that these kids are doing what they're doing precisely BECAUSE no-one gave them a prayer before the tourney started, there was very little hype and virtually no expectation. England have been reset, rejuvenated, both as a team and as a behind the scenes set-up, and they're feeling their way one game at a time. The exciting thing is that we don't know how good they could be, it's a bit like watching Amir Khan fight: they've got the firepower to knock you out, you also know that they could get sparked out at any given moment. Sorry (not sorry) for the wall of text but I literally cannot remember the last time I felt this good watching an England team compete in a major tournament. We just don't do things like this, first having the courage to overcome a difficult opponent at the death (when we should've been out of sight at half time) and then going on to destroy another limited but very tricksy team. The ironical thing of course is that we may not even want to beat Belgium, as the runner-up spot looks to be a far smoother path than finishing top of the group! (Reminds me of Arsenal winning the CL group stage a few years back, first time in a while they did that but who did they get for their troubles? Bayern Munchen, who promptly dumped them out.) |

A good post. I agree about there being little hype compared to previous World Cup tournaments when certain tabloid newspapers kept banging on about Rooney as though he was going to win the Cup single-handedly.

Not having anyone injured who could just still make the tournament (a la Salah in this year's event) has helped as well, all that crap in previous years about metatarsals was a massive sideshow, as were all the superstar wags and what have you. It meant placing an unhealthy amount of focus on a crocked talisman when we should've been focused on the team, this year's build-up has been so different and it's incredibly refreshing.

Well said.
For me this is the best England team since the late 90s for sure, possibly as good as Italia 90. It's a cohesive team which doesn't rely on individual personalities. The Belgium match will be the real test, pass that and sky's the limit as far as I'm concerned, especially with the way the top 5 teams are performing. |

The media certainly do a lot of talking about the fact that they're not talking up England's chances.
![]() Even just before their first game the BBC went to a lot of trouble with a "tongue in cheek" preview of the night England win the cup. Maybe they should award half the trophy to the team that has the best first halfs. They could award it to England right now because, reportedly, nobody's had or going to have better first halfs than England have had in their first two matches. ![]() |

I also hate South American football, but I love watching the matches to see the women in the crowds. I find it hilarious how the (male) camera operators always focus repeatedly of closeups of hot women. I'm fairly certain that Colombian supporter was on screen more than once after she was spotted.
I'm going to miss the early matches today (balls!) but I will at least see the later ones, which should be better, anyway. I wonder how many awful American commentators I will have to sit through today. |

EVERY country has been banging their drums and shouting about winning the world cup. It’s called supporting your country. What is so hard to grasp about that? So much spite in this thread. Last edited by Steedeel; 06-25-2018 at 04:21 PM. |

![]() You are jealous of the English for some reason. I’m not buying your comment tthat you don’t hate us because everything I have read in Your posts indicates otherwise. That’s fine, you are entitled to hate us but let’s not start stereotyping, because every country has it’s hooligans. The bile is seeping out of your posts just like other posts yesterday. It’s pathetic. |
