Don't get me wrong! I like the recent Mission Impossible movies, but for me, they pale in comparison to the first 3 Mission Impossible movies. With each new Mission Impossible movie, they try to top the last one in terms of outrageous stunts Tom Cruise does himself but seem to forget about some sort of actual good plotting. It's as though everything is just a set up for Tom's next most outlandish stunt he does himself. The first 3 were not like that. They were basic, good spy action movies. And it felt like the plot was there for a good reason. Not there simply to set up the next stunt piece.

No, not at all. There aren't really that many big stunts in MI:2. Not like in Rouge Nation anyway.

There is a ton.
The opening alone is massive, not counting the bike chase the biotech fight and the fight at the end.

True, but I feel like now it is more about crazy over the top stunts and less about actual plotting.

That's not really what I am referring to. All the Mission Impossible movies have big stunts, but I'm talking about big stunts involving Tom Cruise that go beyond the levels of normal stunt working. In MI:2 there's maybe two-three at best. In Rouge Nation, there are at the very least 3. The stunt with the airplane door, the stunt inside the tank full of water without an oxygen tank, and the motorcycle chase.

All are very impressive and I love to watch them, but at the end of the day, they feel like they're just there to show off what crazy stunt Tom can do by himself. I like the last two Mission Impossible movies as much as anyone and it is partly due to the amount of practical stunt filming that occurs. But I can't help feeling like the stunts are just there to show off what crazy thing Tom will do next. In comparison to the first 3 the last two Mission Impossible movies, to me, don't hold up as well.

The rock climbing and the knife in the eyeball well above most stunts.
But they have to one up each film, 3 is the one with the least for me personally.

I mean, are you trying to argue that it is a bad thing?

We all know he's a nutter. But it's TC, a true Hollywood action star and one of the few living breathing OT 8s. A legend.

The problem with the stunts in MI is that each subsequent sequel relies more heavily on CGI to accomplish said stunts. The water tank and the car flipping backward are two glaring examples. If they can't complete the stunt in-camera... then don't do it!!
