Except for FF8. That was a giant turd. Tied with 2 & 3 for worst of series. 7 was easily the best, followed closely by 5: 7, 5, 6, 1, 4...8...3, 2.

Paramount deserves some praise here, these are phenomenal upgrades compared to their blu counterparts. There really isn’t a whole lot to be said that hasn’t been said already, the resolution bump is so apparent in GP it’s like you’re looking through a window. Yes, when Cruise is making the climb it’s just as dazzling as you’d expect it to be. Everything is razor sharp here. Detail is impeccable, blacks are gorgeous and deep and the HDR once again brings such a beautiful saturation to the colors you don’t want to take your eyes off the screen! It’s that good. I can see where people like GP the most, but RN is no slouch. That underwater sequence is pretty awesome as well as the bike chase. Just take a look back at GP, when they are driving through the desert, the color of the sand and the blue of the sky. Rich, bold and just lovely. Can’t get enough of these transfers.
I can’t wait to view 1-3. I’m excited and I for one can say you won’t be disappointed by the video on these UHDs, it’s well worth your money. |

picked up mi 1 at fry's. luckily they had one last copy.
really impressed with the overall upgrade, but i can understand the limitations of the source. i wore out my vhs copy as a kid, and didn't revisit the film until recently. saw a cable presentation and wasn't amazing. the 4k does look nice, subtle but nice. i will say, i was kinda hoping for the noc list room to be retina-burning white like the matrix was in some scenes. the red push is really noticeable in some scene. but alas, the overall package is pretty good. |

It was finished photochemically so it is what it is, we're so used to modern DIs making everything seamless from cut to cut that new transfers like this have decisions to make. Do they use the tools to match the cuts better (which may have been the inadvertent cause of the posterisation on Gibson's boat race in Braveheart) as was done on, say, Groundhog Day, the DP being very conscious of the fact that it was supposed to be the same day repeated over and over, or do they use the new grading as an accompaniment to the original photography and keep that baked-in inconsistency?

Mission: Impossible III
Another great presentation. This movie has a lot of shadow, even in broad daylight, and the 4k takes it all in with aplomb. Ethan's black jacket looks great, even when he's hiding behind a black vehicle as rockets and explosions envelope him on a bridge, with the sun's shadow causing the fabric to be steeped in darkness. Well, I saw no crush. I also love how much color and texture there was in Maggie Q's red silk dress at the cocktail party. Just plain gorgeous; the dress is, too! The audio is also very robust and active. Do I wish there was an Atmos mix? Of course I do. However, I won't fault the strengths of the TrueHD 5.1 track. It might lack a little "punch" in the LFE, but not enough for me to care. I could just jack up the sub a couple/few notches, but I was having too good a time to care. It would have benefited from an Atmos track more than the previous two installments, especially during the "airplane chair dump" sequence. Or the bridge attack scene. Oh, and the city street ambiance in Shanghai! Or, perhaps in.... I haven't seen the blu-ray, so I don't have a basis for comparison. The movie itself: I remember enjoying this installment back in 2006, and my opinion hasn't changed one bit. This is a very well paced, competently filmed action spectacle. The handheld action bits were given proper consideration for the viewers' potential motion sickness woes by being executed in short bursts, with an establishing shot and/or slower panning/handheld shot interspersed between the shaky insanity. This is especially evident during the haywire parachute jump from the building in Shanghai, and I commend the editing. I was able to maintain geolocational coherence even though everything kept spinning and flopping around! Also great is the special effects. It looks really good, very organic. This actually might be my favorite Abrams movie. I love Star Trek (2009) as well, but the screenplay has a lot to be desired. Also, his lens flare goes apeshit by that point. In 2006, he still wasn't quite "there" with the overblown flare-festival. [Show spoiler] Nothing like a desperate rookie taking advantage of the tools at hand! I like the abrupt ending, and the final two-shot walking towards the camera. The story has been told. No need to take your time ending it![Show spoiler] I am looking forward to checking out parts 4 and 5 in the next couple days. Hopefully. Depending on how busy I am doing other chores. Thanks. Got them in my cart. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the rest of my reward points and will get them at a pretty good price.
Watched Rogue Nation last night. IMO, it's a better PQ than Ghost Protocol. Very nice with great HDR, colors and all that. I just love this movie. Last edited by cynatnite; 07-02-2018 at 03:40 PM. |

Got my UK set today. Have already divvied up the UHD discs into their own separate cases to make my custom versions, I'll sell the BDs as they come in their own neat little case.

So if they went through all the trouble of matching temperature and tint for the sky in post-production from scene to scene, everything else would change (actor skin tones, color of the ground, clothes, etc.). The only way to compensate for that during the shoot is to always shoot during the same hour or two ("alright, everybody back here tomorrow at 2pm") and always keep the camera pointed the same direction. And if clouds show up that weren't there the day before, you either don't shoot or accept the change. So they pretty much want to do as much as they can in one day. Chris |
