Hmmm...it sounds intriguing from the IMDB plot description, is it worth a blind buy? (don’t really want to read this site’s review, Dr. Svet tends to give away far too much of the plot for my tastes). The only place that seems to have it for a reasonable price is amazon.fr, and they won’t ship it to me.

Edit: never mind, I was looking at the DVD (which they won’t ship to me) instead of the Blu-ray (which they will) - weird.

I haven't seen this one. Will have to check it out. If you know of other French noirs on bluray that are English friendly, be sure to let us know. I would like to see more classic noir films from France.

(I am assuming Rififi is already familiar to you)

One I’m waiting for is Julien Duvivier’s Panique from 1946. There was a news clip earlier this year about the 2K restoration getting US theatrical dates, but nothing since about a video release. Would have thought it would be right up Criterion’s alley.

Your assumption is correct, nitin. Rififi is already familiar to me.

Jules Dassin's films and career are already familiar to me and have been for a long time.

The first time I saw Rififi it was paired with Topkapi in a repertory theater in 1977 or thereabouts.

I've been an admirer of French cinema all my life, and a collector. I have all of Claude Chabrol's suspense films, for example, some of which are noir, and I've been gathering the films by French dramatist Robert Hossein. All his films are noir or crime oriented except Les Miserables and Cemetery Without Crosses. I've been trying to interest Noir City in a festival of Hossein's films.

I'll click Buy It Now on Poison Ivey in a few minutes.

I have a collector's transfer of that with English subs. Yes, it's a very good film. There was a French bluray in 2015 from TFl but I don't know if it was the restoration. It isn't English friendly. I've been wanting to explore Duvivier much further but he's sadly under-represented on English friendly discs. There was the Criterion DVD set, which was wonderful. He was biased toward noir before the French put a name to it. He did exciting work in the 1930s especially.

A lot of Duvivier’s films are available on English friendly blu rays from Pathe (IIRC only Voici Les Temps Des Assassins is not English friendly).

I can only say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and in my opinion it had enough noir elements to justify its inclusion.

Which is a shame as it's probably Duvivier's best noir that I've seen.
I really want 2 of Edouard Molinari's noirs on blu ray. Le Dos Au Mur (1958) & Un Temoin Dans La Ville (1959), they are both superb.

I hope you enjoy Secret Beyond the Door more than I did. Fritz Lang made a lot of great films, but I don't think it's one of them. Too much overacting and Freudian psychobabble.

I already have the Olive release but the sound is so messed up that I wanted to replace it.

It's certainly the least of the 3 Lang/Bennett noirs but I do like it.

How I forgot about the release of Gun Crazy is baffling considering it's only my favorite noir film.
"Moonrise" gets my award for greatest Blu-ray with the worst cover design. Come on Criterion!! A 5 year old could do better then that.

The Arrow one for Secret Beyond the Door is even worse, but at least it’s in keeping with the quality of the movie LOL

I don't know how well the image matches the film, but I like the cover to Moonrise, the colors especially.

My copy is scheduled to arrive from B&N tomorrow. I can't wait to watch Gail Russel in this.

I find Secret Beyond the Door fascinating. Melodrama is a lost art; I think they call it soap opera today. It has the advantage of not being a crime noir like Joan Bennet's previous outings with Fritz Lang (although there is crime), which is a strength. I enjoy the baroque visual flourishes. I think the film shows Fritz Lang at the top of his game, only he's playing a different game, almost.

Thanks, it appears there have been some new releases in the last couple of years. I'm looking up Duvivier blue's on amazonFrance and will no doubt do
some buying.

I recently rewatched Don’t Bother to Knock since I picked up the blu-ray during the TT sale. It is not a film noir. Is it considered one because Richard Widmark is in it? If that is the case, I’m cool with it and all his Westerns need to be added to the list.

There are no colors on the cover and it doesn't even look like the guy in the movie. Great Blu-ray though!

I love that movie, just to look at the cinematography if nothing else. The original artwork on all those film noir Blu-rays were horrible, but thank God for reversible covers.
