It was on smooth which is why I think the husband might've fiddled with the settings. He doesn't like it off and clear is our middle ground. He prefers smooth so this was the compromise.

Crazy how once DIs came along it kind of gave films a certain fresh crisp look to them and here we are almost 15 years later and it still looks impressive. You could release it today and no one would know the movie is that old aside from dated tech in it.
As was said upthread: they didn't scan/master these things on a potato, they're a world away from the shite HD telecines that were being used for concurrent home video transfers at that time.

MI3's brightness I found to be a little overbearing at times, it's still excellent but it's one of those times that I found myself wincing every now and then. It's not helped by the movie having plenty of dark sequences and when watching in a darkened room the eyes adjust to that, so when the highlights pop up they were very strong...but then you're an absolute brightness junkie so I'm not surprised it's your favourite!

I have it on Standard with the OLED light at 40.

I know what I like and husband likes what he likes, which is too bright for my tastes, and this is our compromise.

When he was on the road all the time, I had it set to Cinema. When he started being at home he complained of how dark it was and no matter what I said, he still complained so this is where we're at.

This is the guy that prefers to watch an SD movie rather than get up and get the same flick sitting on the shelf in better quality. Go figure.

I'm this close to ordering St. Elsewhere on DVD. Been watching episodes in the evening on Hulu and last night it was so bad I shut it down a few times because it kept pixelating. Normally our internet is pretty good. We get good bandwidth, but it's just been sluggish.

So, yeah, nails on chalkboard...totally get it.

My girlfriend will watch a movie on TV (sometimes cropped), and it won't matter whether it has started 2 minutes or 20 minutes already when she tunes in. And the Blu-ray/UHD of said movie is sitting right there on the shelf...

lol. looks like i've been profiled.

But yeah. You're definitely right about the scanning and mastering.

It's just kind of bizarrely mind blowing... For movies made prior to the mid 2000s with the use of the DI, you can sort of see a "look" that goes along with the time period in which it was filmed, and you can sort of associate the "modern" or contemporary technology in the movies with that look of the film. So seeing a 90s movie with say computers using Windows 95 fits together with the overall "look" and picture quality of the film. Something like "You've got mail" or whatever.

With the DIs however, you get a movie that looks pretty much as good as something released TODAY in terms of picture quality, however the use of blackberries and other old tech just seems like a bizarre juxtaposition with that extremely high quality PQ that holds its own today if that makes any sense.

It's a good thing I'm not tied down. If I were I'd probably be in prison at some point. It's physical media or nothing.

My ex hated watching movies. She only liked watching movies she had never seen. She also hated spending time in our theatre room. Needless to say we didn’t last very long after we built our house, we saw each other less. Luckily I found the right person who enjoys the same things I do and enjoys watching movies as much as myself. She always asks what movies we have ordered for the weekend.

To keep the thread on track, I skimmed though the BD’s of these today to compare and these have become my favourite set for the format. No contest.

Husband enjoys watching movies and oftentimes goes along with whatever I pick out. Star Trek, definite no for him. John Wayne, it's a hard no from me. Most others, we're fine.

He actually enjoyed The Greatest Showman which shocked me since he really doesn't like musicals that much.

And yeah, so far this set is by far the best out of the other sets. We're going to get a lot of enjoyment out of them. Will try to get 2 and 3 watched tonight.

lol my wife will watch whatever but will attempt to actively seek out watching a movie in "dolby" after i showed her some dolby vision promos on the dolby app when we had the oled in here.

I replaced it with a Samsung Q9FN a couple months ago and she still asks to watch "in dolby" and I have not tried to correct her or even go down that path. I'll take it.
