Going by the early reviews for Fallout, it seems it references most, it not all, previous entries in the series, even bringing back a few characters that were not in Rogue Nation. I would recommend to watch them all, and in order, if you’re planning to watch Fallout because it seems the ‘evolution’ of the style and the character arcs that Ethan Hunt goes through will play an important part in Fallout. It seems like it’s sort of a culmination of the series so I would recommend to watch them all in order to be better ‘prepared’ for Fallout.

Also early reviewers are mostly positive with a bit of mixed . Waiting two weeks feels too long now lol.

I’ve seen 1-3 probably a long time ago. I think I missed the last two. Maybe I’ll wiki 1-3 and start with RN and GP.

Now that I've seen it I am firmly in the "Go ahead and skip MI:2" camp.

I've enjoyed MI 2 even more rewatching it on UHD. It's a glorious action movie with such ott operatic style. It's completely ridiculous but supremely entertaining and a great example of big Hollywood movies at the turn of this century.

You're like 5 years off there.

And truly missing out. All the others are great. Especially 4 and 5.

If I had to stop watching Cruise films due to his off-screen performances -- and that includes things far more spectacular than a single couch jumping episode -- I would miss a lot of great films.

Edge of Tomorrow is one of my most favorite sci-fis of the last decade. I even like Vanilla Sky and Oblivion. I dig the MI franchise and didn't stop watching them because of what I read him.

I caved on the idea of waiting for a MI box set, since I got all 5 for about $20 between BB and AZ (and y'all said that a Paramount box set of this in the US is unlikely). I watched MI last night and there were several eye rolls, well before the train scenes. I'm sure there will be even more tonight.

But the last two films, which are fresher in my memory, are MI entries I remember totally enjoying. So I wouldn't hesitate checking them out, even if you need to rent the regular BDs ... especially since Fallout is coming out in 2 weeks.

Chris

I really need to see the unrated version one day.

I certainly understand why people like MI:2. It has its own style and they clearly went all-in while making it. Seems like if it works for you, it really works. But if it doesn't work for you, well...me and my wife were pretty into it and having some good laughs until about the 30-minute mark. That's when she got bored and stopped caring, and I simply found myself flummoxed at what was happening on screen. The strange cuts, random slo-mo, and bizarre mannerisms made the whole thing feel very sloppy to me. A lot of the time I it felt like it was being directed by someone who had never actually made a movie before. It was hard for me to reconcile with the great Hong Kong films Woo had made previously. For me, MI:2 was basically the culmination of everything I hated about 90's action films, but one man's trash is another man's treasure so I can also understand the love it gets.

True dat. I personally don't get the love for Rob Zombie's directorial filmography. None of them looked any good for me to go out of my way to see. But there are those that like them. Nothing wrong with that. We all like what we like.

Indeed. I was even thinking there was a time in my life when I would have loved the tone and direction of MI:2, but that time has come and gone. But maybe in ten years I'll be in a place where I can enjoy it. Once my son is old enough to start watching my collection I'm sure there's going to be a lot of stuff I like vicariously through him and I can see this being one of those films.

Going by the reviews, 4-5 are the best looking of the bunch (understandably) and they're arguably the best in the series as well, BUT I'm actually leaning toward only buying 1-3, because I don't own them on blu ray, so they're not double dips..

btw, I still don't understand what was/is the big deal of the couch jumping thing on Oprah it was cringe-worthy, yes, but that's about it

I think the couch thing got under people’s skin because it came off as so phoney, at best. And at worst it was just a performance to cover something far more insidious involving the cult that dominates Tom’s personal life. I guess all’s well that ends well.

Man, I love Rob Zombie's stuff, barring Lords of Salem which fell apart for me once she entered the door, and 31... which just kinda sucked thanks to a few terrible side-characters and grating sound design. I think he needs a moderate amount of money for production value and polish. And the recurring ensemble helps, because then you feel like you're in on something when you recognize half the cast from another one of the movies.

I actually don't encounter many fans, though. Mostly strident hate. Probably why he went from semi-mainstream to indie.

I hope it references MI2 heavily. If only to rub some people here the wrong way.
