Only one I like enough to buy is Clear and Present Danger.

Red October is good, but a touch dull.

Patriot Games is slick, but I have political issues with it.

The other two were forgettable.

Just curious what bugs you about it. American interventionism? The depiction of the IRA and the more radical faction? The monarchs as victims?

I agree the other two are forgettable in comparison to the first three.

Neat. Day one just for the first three movies, especially HFRO.

It's a neo-classical, taut cat n mouse Cold War thriller in the old school Hollywood style. It doesn't even feel PG, but it is. I love it.

Sometimes HFRO feels retro like an older naval war film from back in the 40's or 50's, but with a slick modern spin.

Mainly 1 and 2.

But also 3 because the idea that the full uncut IRA wouldn't target royals is ridiculous.

They did and people died.

I did say it was good.

I just remember it dragging a bit last time I watched it.

I gotcha. Very true and fair criticisms.

That's because it's a post-modern film. Think Sink the Bismark! or Run Silent, Run Deep with a bigger budget, updated FX, editing, lighting, and directing techniques. Throw in a few top-billed actors (Connery, Glenn, James Earl Jones; Baldwin was starting to peak at this point) and you've got a Hollywood box-office package. HFRO is unique in that it was released on the cusp of the CGI era (The Abyss and T2) so it mainly has digital touch ups rather than full bore CGI.

Even what Markgway said about the pacing feeling dull and slow I think points to how newer audiences have changed how new movies today are paced (at least with their action films). Something long like Blade Runner 2049 pretty much bombs where as the slightly shorter Avengers films have a much more kinetic pace to them and do much better at the box office. Granted, the Marvel movies have a much larger, devoted fan base than the Blade Runner films.

At any rate, HFRO kind of rounds out a McTeirnan action trilogy that he really never comes back to. His later efforts, while good, don't come close to his initial three films.

Oooh, I just realized with the upcoming release of Predator in 4K as well, McTiernan's three best movies will be available in 4K before Cameron's two missing links even make it to Blu. Gosh darn you, Fox. Darn you to heck.

Would also love Fox to release at least the Die Hard Trilogy™ in 4K plus Sony doing a typical bang-up job with Last Action Hero, but I dream.

It also inspired my favorite Robot Chicken skit

Loved this too. I always dug how they managed to cut together all those action films into one piece. This was on the Clear and Present Danger or Face/Off VHS if I remember correctly.

Yeah it was on a few titles. I always found it odd that they included Apocalypse Meow. Doesn’t fit with the others.
