Hi pixote

Agree with you mostly but also think the advertising hype showing things jumping off the screen and just about touching the viewer, etc did shape a false impression and might have turned off a few expecting more in thrills. Actually had me believe there was something wrong with my own set when mostly seeing objects protrude subtly beyond the screen than things coming right at me.

Have learned proper 3D is the correct balance of depth from back to front, with objects placed in their natural settings. Pop outs can be fun but what's really important is how it immerses one into the viewing experience. That makes it breathtaking. A film like "The Walk" doesn't really pop "out" but if one is scared of heights, it could cause the viewer to clean his or her floor afterwards.

And a film like "Comin' At Ya" was a waste of time and money. After seeing a few pop outs without substance it becomes a bore.

Well, the title is Comin' at Ya!

When I was a salesman, some customers complained after watching a movie on their new 3D TV that there was something wrong with it. Nothing was coming out-of-the-screen!

If all 3d had to offer was depth, I'd settle for 4k TV with HDR and never buy another 3d disk. When they bring out that mythical new glasses-free 3d TV, they better include a knob to adjust overall depth and another knob to adjust the point at which objects protrude from the screen. Otherwise it might not do any better than the current crop of gear.

Glasses free 3D tvs will never be able to give pop out, like on 3D screens now, as you need the filter at your eyes not like 6 feet in front.

I don't know about this... the 3DS does popout really well, even if you hold it at arm's length.

Joe, for one reason or another 3d seems to be a bit like eating steak. Most of us enjoy steak, we just prefer our steaks a bit different, ie; medium rare vs well done and depth vs popout etc.... Regardless of what any of us wants, we should be happy that we can still buy content in 2018. I don't think anyone knows where we'll be by 2020

Hi pixote,

Being happy is the main thing and I think that we are. And where will we be in 2020? Well, with good health for us all, we'll be exactly where we are now. Sitting in front of our sets and loving our 3D!

I just ordered The Amityville Horror 3 in 3D from Amazon Spain for $21.21 US shipped (considerably less than the US Amazon import price at $40). They charged 10 euros for it but the cheapest shipping was 7 Euros. Supposedly, the effects on this are pretty good for pop-outs. Amazon UK was like 30 cents more. Germany was considerably more. It's a Spanish import so one would assume it would be the cheapest from there. Even so, it has English in 5.1 (Spanish is only 2.0).

Lots of pop-out but the transfer has lots of problems.

I guess I'll find out. It's just so disappointing how little negative parallax (popouts) are used in modern 3D. I get there's a point of gimmickry, but just as often there's lost opportunities for more impressive shots. Jaws 3D wasn't the greatest movie, but it had some of the most impressive 3D I've seen at home, albeit a bit grainy.

The complaints in that review are extremely overblown. It's certainly not even close to the best looking 3D blu-ray, and one specific effect (a huge fly that's supposed to come out of the screen at you) is completely missing, though the shot is still there... minus the actual fly.

It's still totally watchable and a lot of fun, imo. Just don't go in expecting some kind of revelatory remaster.

I just watched Amityville 3D. My god! Talk about pop-outs galore! It was GLORIOUS!!!! Anyone who says this is a "bad" 3D movie is loco. Yeah, the story is questionable at best. Yeah, there's some crosstalk here (hell some new movies have crosstalk here) and sometimes one of the eyes is like black where it's visible in the other eye. But these are minor quibbles in the grand scheme of themes. EVERYTHING is perfect 3D in the sense that it's real 3D and they shove everything at the camera. The story is just enough to not bore the living hell out of me like "Comin At Ya" did while showcasing more things you can grab with your hands than Jaws 3D and about every other 3D movie I have combined.

I did notice a ridiculous sync problem with the audio. I had to set my receiver to its maximum of 160ms delay to get the audio to line up properly (yeah the disc has some issues), but the glorious GLORIOUS 3D!!!!

OK, I'm overselling it. But we have people jumping for joy that there's a couple of minor popouts on Thor 3 (the Hammer near the start was the only really impressive effect and it was brief) and Black Panther (still waiting for my copy, but some reviews indicated more use than in the past). This movie has popouts in every scene naturally, let alone the stuff they throw at the camera. I jumped involuntarily more than a few times at stuff coming at me. This is a SHOWCASE film for pop-outs. It and Jaws 3D are still the best.

HOWEVER, I did just watch Tiny Giants 3D (about a mouse and a chipmunk by the BBC) and MAN! Talk about a PERFECT looking 3D "movie"! Flight of the Butterflies looked GREAT in 4K, but the 3D version had really bad contrast and washed out colors in many scenes! I thought my projector had gone wonky! I know their original footage is OK because it was glorious in 4K! The 3D effects were very good (butterflies were flying around my room a few times during the 40-some minutes), but it just lacked visual punch half the time and there was a lot of faint crosstalk even at my optimal settings.

Tiny Giants, OTOH... WOW!!!! GORGEOUS colors! Sharp as 2K gets! Absolutely NO CROSSTALK here what-so-ever! 3D popouts! Slow motion pop-out effects with water, falling leafs and the little rat bastards flying in super slow-mo across the screen! It even had a fun "story" of sorts. GRADE A+++ !!!! The sound was good too with surround used well. This has been on sale for $11 something. Worth every penny!!!

As for the pop-outs... well, I love them too. How could I not? "Gimmick" my ass. They're FUN. They're part of 3D, just as depth is.

Check out Despicable Me (the first one) when Gru crash lands his spaceship and it comes to a stop (towards the end of the movie). This is a great example of pop-out without it being a "gimmick". The Final Destination 3D movies are fun too with pop-out moments used to great effect. If I have to duck to miss shrapnel then I am enjoying myself!

I love 3D and still buy 3D blurays, but my main annoyance when comparing 3D to 4K viewing is not so much the lack of pop-outs but rather how freakin' dim and 'shadowy' the picture looks overall.
If you look at any movie with a bright scene like a sequence taking place on a sunny beach, the 4K disc always look radiant and vibrant. The 3D, although with added depth, looks like the beach has a permanent overcast and things always look gloomy and shadowy even when they are not supposed to.

Minions (2015): After the end credits there's a 2,5 minute "show" with gorgeous pop outs. It's really a showcase and fun to watch! There are even some great (fake) frame breaking effects!

I'd say the first Despicable Me movies, Coraline, Oz The Great and Powerful, My Bloody Valentine, House of Wax, Alice In Wonderland, Ghosts Of The Abyss, and Pirahna.

The Wizard of Oz is an honorable mention. The MGM logo at the beginning is pretty effective, along with the shot of the Wicked Witch threatening Dorothy. Her finger looks like it's poking out towards you. I guess it was enough to change the rating from G to PG. Odd.

Despicable Me - The reveal of Gru with his nose trying to poke your eyes out.

Coraline - The open credit sequence. The needle constantly pops towards you.

Oz TG&P- Almost everything, but emphasis on what's going on during the tornado and the thing that spits in Franco's face after he meets Mila.

My Bloody Valentine - Like Oz, but with other objects. A pickaxe, a shotgun in your face, a really hot woman running around at a motel.

House of Wax - Same category as Coraline and The Wizard of Oz.

Alice - Same as Oz TG&P

Ghosts of the Abyss - The scene showing preparations for a dive, especially when the guy tests the sub's robot arm.

Pirahna - Get ready to get threatened with a taser and have Jerry O'Connell's junk float in your face. Same for mutilated body parts and plenty of alcohol.

I just watched that Ghost in the Shell Solid State Society. The pop out effects and depth was great, especially with the augmented reality windows that pop up in their point of views.
