I guess I could see if you didn't like the Mission: Impossible movies, you'd like 2 the best because it's not like the others... I dunno, I'm reaching here.

Something positive, something positive, let's see... uh, the soundtrack is pretty okay.

Hey, any Metallica fans remember when you had to kind of be a closet fan for a while, because of the whole Napster suit over I Disappear leaking early?

Watched Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol yesterday:

PQ:
Excellent picture but not quite perfect. Detail was amazing, the Burj Khalifa sequence has jaw-dropping levels of detail, it reminded me of Interstellar's IMAX sequences. Contrast from the source (and transfer) was more conservatively used here when compared to the previous entry, which had it dialed very high from its source (DI). HDR was still put to good use, however, adding pop and punch to the image without compromising neither dark nor bright highlights. Black levels were deep and inky and with plenty of gradations that rendered shadow detail extremely well, same for bright and specular objects. Colors have more nuance here as well, especially noticeable in the Mumbai sequence towards the end of the film where the expanded color range makes the image more vivid while still looking maintaining it natural. Film grain was very well resolved throughout, now without any of that chunkiness which the first two films suffer a bit from due to the compression. I did, however, spot intermittent macroblocking in tricky areas of the picture, most noticeable in the sky and during the sandstorm during the Burj Khalifa sequence. The sky in that scene (when Ethan is climbing outside the tower) has some extreme color gradation and while it does not have banding, the macroblocking is apparent. Same with the sandstorm. Overall it is still an amazing transfer that does not disappoint. I just wish Paramount would be slightly more careful with their compression as their sources have lately been top-notch. If they were as careful as they are with their new releases, transfers from catalogue titles such as this one would look just as good. 4.5 / 5

AQ:
Demo material all throughout. Even though it is limited to lossless 7.1, it still sounds amazing. It impresses the most with its discrete and panning effects of pretty much every sound in the film, both in the front stage as well as from all four surround channels. From the sandstorm, to debris from explosions, to smaller sounds like music and voices, the track is replete with this sort of immersion which just amplifies the intensity of the film. It also has plenty of dynamic range and low-end support to make it a top-tier mix. This just might be the best 7.1 track I have heard, rivaling those like the one from Prometheus and The Avengers. I would say it sounds great upmixed with Dolby Surround but it's almost like it doesn't need it. The track by itself is so immersive already that upmixing provides little (almost unneeded in Atmos setups) difference. 5 / 5 all the way.

This might be, so far, my favorite entry in the franchise. Brad Bird did a phenomenal job directing it, and of course Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast give it their all. The set-pieces are big and exciting and Bird effortlessly mixes those big scenarios with smaller details which just combine together to create a thrilling spy/action film. Everyone gets some nice character development, and all members of the team contribute equally, all pulling their weight with Ethan obviously doing the most work and dangerously injuring himself to complete the mission. The villain is a bit weak but it almost doesn't matter when all the positive aspects elevate the film to this degree. As far as popcorn entertainment goes, I'm willing to say that it doesn't get much better than this.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation:

PQ:
Practically perfect. The color palette is nicely expanded so that the UHD looks better saturated, with more nuanced colors, and looking more vivd when appropriate. HDR is on point, making the image darker while still preserving all dark and bright detail. Bright highlights and daytime outdoor sequences are brighter and have more punch, but most of the picture takes place in low-light conditions and the transfer does an outstanding job at preserving a ton of shadow detail, especially in darker clothing such as all the black suits and jackets that the various characters wear throughout the film. Even with the low lighting and darker clothing you can still make out the wrinkles and lines on them. Black levels are deep even if they are a tiny bit elevated, but I easily forgive this due to the myriad of the dark, subtle gradations that were saved in the picture. It gives it a ton of depth even if overall it is still darker than the standard blu-ray. This time around I noticed a bit of macroblocking in a couple of instances but it was so fleeting and brief that it is hardly worth mentioning. It seems the film was shot with a mixture of digital and 35mm cameras, nonetheless I saw a very healthy layer of grain throughout. I'm not sure if they 'selectively' added it but it was quite apparent throughout. Either way it is handled extremely well and looks natural. Fine detail is an upgrade for the most part as well even if it isn't as impressive as in Ghost Protocol, but given the source that is expected. I'm glad Paramount finally hit the target with Rogue Nation with their compression. Not the very best I've ever seen but definitely very high up there. 5 / 5

AQ:
The Dolby Atmos track is perfect. A little subtle and not as aggressive with its directionality and discrete effects, but given the action is less grand and 'quieter' than the previous chapter, this is not surprising. It does feel a bit of a disappointment after all the crazy immersion from Ghost Protocol, but it is true to the source and is kept as intended as to not distract from the on screen events. Directionality is outstanding as are atmospheric effects. The top layer isn't as active as in other Atmos mixes but given that very little happens above the screen, the results are faithful to the film. They do come into play to expand the soundstage and make things more immersive such as in the underwater scene, but they do not call much attention to themselves. If they had added more there it would have sounded forced and overdone. Low end support is plentiful and layered, and dynamic range is broad (the motorcycle/car chase sequence is an excellent example of this). Overall, not as aggressive as the mix from Ghost Protocol but given this chapter in the series doesn't call for such aggressive complexity, the results are still perfect. 5 / 5

I feel this chapter sacrificed a bit of excitement in favor of a more complex plot and characters. While this did work for the character of Ilsa (played excellently by Rebecca Ferguson), I feel the "smaller" action was not completely justified by that complexity as the overall plot with the Syndicate gets a bit convoluted and at the end what really added to the story was how it affected Ethan and Ilsa because of how their government agencies react and how that negatively affects both of them differently, and not necessarily as a big threat to the world. If they had managed to keep big action set pieces, like from the previous chapter, while keeping this level of (imperfect but still good) complexity in the plot and characters it would have surpassed Ghost Protocol. As it stands, I still very much enjoyed it but I felt GP ended up a slightly better overall film. I'm suspecting Fallout will keep that complexity and ramp up the action and suspense to match or surpass GP, and if they do so it should, IMO, make it the best entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Fingers crossed.

The first hour of MI:2 drags like a wet rug. Or at least I thought so the second time I tried to watch it a few years ago. I'll give it another chance someday.

I'm glad you felt that way. I'm about to watch it again this week because besides loving the movie itself, the transfer really made an impression on me.

Lost, hopeless, dejected...those are just some of the words that describe how I felt after watching MI:2. But I'm happy to report that after finishing MI:3, my life is back on track. Super duper entry in the series and a very nice looking disc, to boot. It's only a testament to what a great year of releases it's been that I wouldn't put this among 2018's finest UHDs. But it got me back on board the MI train. Now I just need Amazon to ship RN and GP and I'll finally be caught up on this series.

Don’t understand the hate for MI:2? Think it’s a fun action popcorn flick, straightforward and entertaining. Good scenes, good set up, decent villain and younger hotter TN.

Not sure the moaners/armchair critics have made better films themselves, please correct me if I’ve got that wrong.

Have you ever not liked a movie?
If so... have you made better movies?
Just curious.

I just don't see the relation from one part of the argument to another here.

I break your argument to this kind of logic:
I like the movie.
Others didn't.
Therefore, the haters haven't made a good movie.

So we're not allowed to criticize films if we've not made better ones ourselves?

Right gotcha.

I can't wait to see the movies this person made.
Also, what if he/she made movies that we don't like, but he/she DOES like?
What happens then?
Does our opinion of the movies THEY made become irrelevant because THEY liked the movie that they made by themself?
I can't wait to find out!

Started my rewatch of these last night. I used to love the first film back in the late '90s as a kid. I didn't like MI2 quite as much but still I'm pretty sure I watched it 3-4 times between theatrical release and VHS. Saw MI3 twice back in 2006. And have only seen Ghost Protocol (on BD) and Rogue Nation (in theaters) once each. I had planned a rewatch of 1-3 on BD back in 2012, but only got as far as the first movie. So I'm looking forward to getting through these again, especially in 4K.

The first film's new transfer is gorgeous and the movie still holds up pretty well even if it's a much more deliberately paced film than any of the successive entries. The tech in the film is all pretty outdated, but I was surprised by how well the train sequence at the end held up. I don't know how much of it was CGI, but it seemed like a daringly VFX-heavy sequence for 1996 - in a movie that is otherwise VFX shy. I always felt the whole Jim Phelps thing was a bit convoluted and it didn't necessarily work much better this time. The twist is revealed too early on and Ethan plays it far too coolly for it to have as much impact as it should. The rest of the movie lacks suspense as we just sit back and watch the villains falling right into Ethan's hands. Anyway, great looking disc and I had fun revisiting it.
