sure they are, it's all about boosting the specs of their sets compared to the competition, but honestly why would they lie? i am sure that it is true in a controlled enviroment with all the picture settings turned way down, surely it would be possible

Regardless, if you used your set for 8 hours/day:

100,000 hours = 34.2 years
60,000 hours = 20.5 years
40,000 hours = 13.7 years

Figured I'd ask here rather than make a new thread.

So I've been in the market for a new HDTV and originally went with the 46XBR6 and was satisfied with everything but the size so I sent it back. I had planned on going with the 52XBR6 and calling it a day but I've noticed that the Pioneer 5020FD Kuro came down in price to where it's actually less than the 52XBR6 (on Amazon, where I will order from regardless) and so I went and finally saw the Kuro in action and was pretty blown away by the picture. I would have loved to play around with trying different content on each TV but apparently the reps at BB can't be bothered with all that. Anyway, I'm considering it quite heavily but I am a little outside of my comfort zone with plasmas as thus far I've only owned LCDs and generally been quite happy with them. So is there any way in which LCDs have Plasmas beat? Handling of motion, response time, longevity, build quality, playback of SD signals, anything? This is going to be it for me for probably another 2 years and I want to get it right.

No, No, No, No and No

LCDs do not suffer (too much) from image retention, but then it's really not an issue with plasams either as IR goes away quickly when watching moving images. LCDs seem to do better in rooms that have a lot of direct sunlight shining on/near your TV. I know in the middle of the day, I have sun shining directly on my living room plasma, and it makes watching the thing very difficult. Fortunately, we rarely watch that set during the day. LCDs are lighter, if that matters to you. They use less electricity, but over the course of a year you are only looking at ~$50 more (assuming 8hrs on every day). For all things picture quality related, plasma outperforms LCD every time.
