If you already own the blu-rays, I would hold off on upgrading for now, but if you don't have the blu-rays yet, you might as well get the 4K now and future proof your collection.

Like when people bought the DVD + Blu-ray combo packs to be "future proof"?

I don't believe in future-proofing. Things will always only get cheaper over time.

Future-proofing is just a marketing gimmick to get you to pay for more than what you really need.

Do you really think that they will stop printing copies of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and all existing 4K copies will go up in price over five years?

Remember in the 1980s when movies came out on VHS, they were charging $70.00 a copy. Now you can watch that same movie in hi-def streamed to your living room for maybe $3.99.

Future proofing in video formats is futile.
The 4K Blus we buy today aren't going to worth much ten years from now.
Just look @ VHS tapes, DVDs, cars made in 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968, 1958, ...

This might be the pessimist in me, but 4K Blu-rays are probably the last in the line of physical movie media.

And who knows if all the movies you want now will be in print in 5 years. If physical media dies faster than predicted, studios may discontinue in an attempt to streamline the transition to purely digital.

That said, I think Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays may survive for classic/high quality titles and for release by auteur filmmakers in the future, similar to how vinyl lives on today.

Most 4k new releases are only $5 more than the blu-ray. Makes more sense to just spend the extra $5 and get the 4k now instead of buying the blu-ray now and then double dipping again when you do decide to upgrade and have to buy the 4k version. Will be a while until uhds hit the $5 mark.

One or two years is not much into the future.

Realistically, we will see a 8K Blu format, and another shot @ 3D Blu...in 4K...glassesless.

Many of the DVDs I owned of movies I actually enjoy, I upgraded to blu-ray. Many of my DVDs I haven't and probably won't. Don't see myself replacing any of my blurays with 4K though. That being said, any new movies I buy, if there's a 4K option that's what I've been buying.

I am in the same boat, if I already have a 4k title on blu, I won’t upgrade and if it’s a newly released title, or one I don’t own on blu already, usually 4k & blu would be the best option. Except for new 2d animated films, those I can’t fathom being worthwhile on 4k.

Unless I read on here the 4k edition has problems or a look I don’t care for, ie. the bluray edition of the latest Close Encounters release, then obviously that factors into it.

There’s no such thing as future proofing if you’re looking at long term. Short term 10-15 years tops, if we’re lucky.

The 4k Blu-rays we buy today aren't worth much as soon as we buy them, you don't have to wait 10 years. The collecting movies games isn't meant to make profit by selling our collection later, it's an addiction for movie, high quality picture and sound. Actually a lot of classic cars are worth a whole lot more than the price they sold for brand new.

Depends on the movie. For the past week, I have been trying to find the John Candy classic, Summer Rental. It never had a Blu-ray release. The DVD is long out of print and I cannot find it on streaming services. And to think, had I bought it on DVD from Walmart bargain bins a few years ago, I wouldn't have to search for it like this.

Same could be said for the Ewok movies. Sure, not the greatest but I remember seeing the DVD years ago and passing on them because I thought "this one will be a cheap bargain bin for many years". A few years ago, I wanted to show them to one of my kids and I could not find them anywhere and it was priced highly on Ebay.

Had to resort to torrenting which I hate to do but sorry, no choice.

Some films are collector's items, like cars, paintings, ...with limited production.
Some 4K Blus will be worth more in fifty, hundred years, ...less than 0.0001%

Amazon Prime Day ended up nine hours ago; I hope everyone found some awesome deals. ...Refrigerators, 4K Blu-ray players, 4K TVs, 4K Blu-ray movies, 3D Blu-ray movies, vacuum cleaners, expresso coffee machines, virtual reality games and glasses.

I found most of the actual "deals" to not have a Prime Day tag. Everything "substantial" in my very long wish lists, except for those 1-2 items, actually cost more during Prime Day...

But I did find a bunch of small items (batteries, power strips, everyday stuff like that) that probably few people looked at that were somewhat cheaper, decent deals I'd say. The only thing I bought was a game, it was quite a bit cheaper yesterday (only) and not an official Prime Day deal...I thought it was a (permanent) price drop, otherwise I would have mentioned it.

The only thing I bought was the fire stick for an older Sony TV in a second bedroom that only had Netflix built into it.

I already have a 4K set-up so it doesn't apply to me anyways.

I understand what you are saying but when you say that it is only $5.00 more for the Blu + 4K, you are forgetting about the Blu which you usually end up paying full price for.

My point is that all 4K discs will only get cheaper in time. If I am not using it today, I will not be paying more for it because I can almost certainly pay less for it if I buy it tomorrow.

There is also of course, the time value of money as well.

Ironically, I have a moderate 4K collection with no intention to upgrade to 4K. It's not my fault that the new SteelBooks force me to buy a 4K disc.

We are in the same city. I picked up SUMMER RENTAL for $2.79 April last year as part of a three-pack with PLANES, TRAINS... and FOUL PLAY. This was at Value Village.

I saw the Ewok movies on the shelf this past Spring at the Salvation Army.
